About the role

This is a part-time position based in Bathurst, NSW. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for providing targeted support and assistance to children and families experiencing homelessness and/or family and domestic violence with the aim of promoting their wellbeing and strengthening family connections.

What you'll be doing

Engage with children and families to build trusting, supportive relationships in a safe and welcoming environment

Conduct informal check ins and observations to monitor children’s wellbeing and identify any immediate support needs or safety concerns

Provide guidance to mothers including practical strategies for managing trauma related behaviours and promoting connection

Plan and facilitate play based activities that support children’s development, regulation and expression

Assist with morning and afternoon routines, including preparation for school, transport if required or facilitating access to education services

Support the coordination of family routines to help establish structure and stability

Make any internal or external referrals for children requiring specialist services

Participate in team meetings, case conferences and safety planning providing insight into the child’s progress and development needs

Document daily interactions, progress notes and any identified risks in accordance with organisational policies and child protection guidelines

Prepare resources and spaces for child friendly engagement, maintaining a safe, inclusive and culturally responsive environment

Provide transport assistance when required for appointments, school or group activities

Selection Criteria

Experience working with children and families impacted by trauma and DFV

Understanding of child development

Strong communication, engagement and interpersonal skills

Ability to work autonomously and within a team environment

Knowledge of child protection and mandatory reporting responsibilities

Ability to design and deliver appropriate child related activities for children

Knowledge of community resources relevant to the needs of women escaping domestic violence, experiencing homelessness and women with mental health or substance use issues.
