Northern Territory Remote Pharmacist

To continue driving excellence, and facilitate a collaborative healthcare model in remote communities, we are seeking a full time Pharmacist to join our Regional / Remote service team to work across the Northern Territory.

The Role

Experience the reward of making a real difference as a Remote Pharmacist living in the world-famous Northern Territory. This unique role offers the chance to work at the heart of Australia’s remote Aboriginal communities, delivering essential pharmacy services, supporting culturally responsive care, and building genuine connections. You'll combine clinical expertise with purpose, all while exploring one of the most breathtaking and culturally rich regions in the world.

A Monday to Friday roster with a rotating roster of four (4) weeks at a city base of Darwin, Katherine or Alice Springs and two (2) weeks travelling (Air and Road) and being onsite at clinics within remote communities to provide high quality, culturally safe pharmacy services.

Reporting to the Head of Remote Pharmacy Services, this role will work closely with Aboriginal health workers and remote clinics to empower residents and drive better health care outcomes for patients living in remote communities.

Duties will include, but not be limited to:

· Deliver comprehensive and culturally appropriate clinical pharmacy services including medication reviews, medication reconciliation activities, and prescribing support in accordance with established protocols and collaborative care plans to remote communities.

· Conduct medication audits and ensure compliance with drug storage standards, cold chain management, RS4/S8 medication requirements for all remote health centres.

· Supports the safe use and accessibility of emergency medications for clinic staff, by conducting regular kit checks.

· Manage and place medication and medical supply orders for assigned clinics.

· Maintain and regularly review the imprest stock list, keeping stock levels and medications on site aligned with clinic needs.

· Monitor stock expiry dates and patient own medication on site to minimise wastage

· Provide education and training sessions to clinic staff and patients, promoting medication understanding and adherence

· Collaborate with Aboriginal health workers to ensure culturally safe and responsive pharmacy services are delivered to remote communities. This will be inclusive of respectful communication, recognition of kinship and social determinants, and trauma-aware practice

· Ensure all pharmacy services and communications are accurately recorded in the clinic’s electronic health record system.

· Work within clinic protocols and jurisdictional legislation e.g. NT Medicines, Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Act.

· help train local staff to support consistent and culturally appropriate service delivery.

· Document all clinical interventions, orders, audits, and communications accurately

· Provide timely and practical feedback on clinical and operational targets and issues to inform service improvement and innovation

· Participate actively in innovation, quality improvement, and service development initiatives

· Contribute to team-based care by working at the Darwin, Katherine, or Alice Springs pharmacy base as needed, to strengthen collaboration and understanding of colleague roles and workflows.

· Ensure clinical standards and medication safety upheld.

About You

This role would suit a clinically confident, team-orientated pharmacist who is passionate about improving health outcomes in remote and regional communities. You’ll be someone who thrives in diverse environments, works respectfully across cultures, and is excited to experience the beauty and complexity of northern Australia from a unique and meaningful perspective.

Essential Criteria

Current registration as a Pharmacist with AHPRA

Minimum 3 years post-intern experience in a clinical or community pharmacy setting

Demonstrated clinical competence and confidence, with the ability to exercise sound professional judgement, including in remote and autonomous settings

Strong understanding of the health issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities

Current and valid Class C Driver’s Licence, with a demonstrated ability to safely operate light vehicles as required for the role.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work respectfully with culturally diverse patients and colleagues

Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, including attending team meetings and following direction and guidance from the Head of Remote Pharmacy Services and senior staff

High level of attention to detail and strong skills in medication safety, reconciliation and error checking

Resilience and adaptability, with the ability to work and live in remote areas for periods of time away from home.

Desirable Criteria

Accreditation to conduct Home Medication Reviews

Immunisation accreditation in accordance with state/territory guidelines

Completion of ‘Deadly Pharmacists Foundation Training’ with Pharmaceutical Society of Australia or similar cultural safety training
