Purpose of Role
To support the Mill and Feeding Manager in delivering accurate and efficient feed programs by operating and maintaining automated feeding systems, monitoring livestock performance, managing feed inventories and ensuring the reliability of critical machinery and technical infrastructure.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Working under the general guidance and support of the Mill and Feeding Manager, the Animal Husbandry Technician will undertake the following responsibilities in a professional manner:
Animal Husbandry & Livestock Support:
Monitor livestock health, condition and productivity to assess the effectiveness of feed programs.
Provide nutrition assessments and advice to support optimal livestock performance.
Examine environmental and other factors that influence the growth, health and production of livestock.
Ensure accurate feed allocations and maintain detailed feeding records by becoming proficient in feedlot management software and systems, ensuring rations meet nutritional specifications and operational requirements
Assist with the sourcing and purchasing of feedlot commodities, ensuring timely supply and cost-effective procurement. Liaise with commodity suppliers and monitor market trends.
Work closely with feedlot department managers, external consultants and internal teams including livestock, maintenance and administration to ensure efficient day-to-day feedlot operations.
Feed Mill & Feeding Operations:
Operate and monitor mill equipment, mixers, augers, conveyor systems and automated feeding systems to ensure high-quality ration preparation and delivery.
Operate loaders, feeding trucks, stationary mixers and other feeding machinery and conduct daily pre-start checks and preventative maintenance.
Automation Systems:
Monitor and maintain automated feeding and batching systems, ensuring accurate ration distribution and system integrity.
Troubleshoot and resolve faults in feeding software or automation hardware.
Provide advice, training and technical support and services on technology solutions such as sensors, farm management software, data and robotics.
Assist to install, program, test, repair and maintain animal health monitoring equipment
Apply technology and automation systems to support primary production such as mills, conveyor belts, feed truck systems etc.
Ensure Compliance:
Adhere to all Barmount Feedlot policies and procedures, including those relating to quality assurance, workplace health and safety, animal welfare and environmental responsibilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Diploma in Agricultural field or relevant experience.
Working at heights and other relevant tickets are also preferred, however not essential.
Proficient computer skills and technical aptitude.
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
High level of organisational skills to organise daily and weekly work schedule.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment effectively.
