What is the role?

AFP Intelligence Operations is seeking applications from suitably qualified professionals for the role of Team Leader Intelligence.

Careers in the AFP involve diverse and challenging work combating a broad range of complex crimes impacting Australia's national security. As an AFP employee you will have the opportunity to work closely with a range of law enforcement and government agencies at state, territory, Commonwealth and international level.

AFP Intelligence Operations is one of many functions that contribute to the domestic and international objectives of the Australian Federal Police. AFP Intelligence Operations provides specialist intelligence capability for the AFP across a range of criminal and national security threats including, but not limited to:

transnational serious and organised crime;

human trafficking and people smuggling;

money laundering and financial crime;

terrorism;

cybercrime;

crimes against the Commonwealth;

fraud and corruption;

espionage and foreign interference.

AFP Intelligence Operations delivers outcome-focused, high quality intelligence insights to inform decision making, maximise operational outcomes and enhance our understanding of the criminal threat environment.

As an Intelligence Team Leader you play a pivotal role in developing our people (intelligence practitioners), setting the directions of our teams and delivering operational and organisational outcomes for Intelligence Operations. An Intelligence Team Leader plays a vital role in managing change and influencing behaviours that lead to a supportive culture that respects the perspectives, talents and values of each individual. The expectation is that you will deliver on the core responsibilities, consistent with the AFP values, AFP leadership philosophy and AFP corporate strategies, and meet the requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?

AFP Intelligence Operations is seeking individuals who are self-directed and have the flexibility and resilience to thrive in a dynamic and at times high tempo working environment. This role leads and manages an intelligence team and is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the team and delivering operational and organisational outcomes. The successful candidate will demonstrate they are capable of performing in a cooperative and collaborative environment; one that is responsive and flexible in meeting the objectives of the AFP. This work will include:

Leading and managing an intelligence team engaged in analysis of collected and collated information to produce and disseminate intelligence which influences organisational decision-making at all levels.

Developing strategies and plans for an intelligence team to provide tactical, operational and strategic analysis to influence critical decision making regarding the deployment of operational resources. Providing intelligence products and briefings to operational areas, senior management and other cooperating agencies.

Supporting and developing team members in their intelligence professional development and coaching and mentoring team members in their leadership development.

Developing plans and ensuring all resources are effectively directed at achieving business area outputs. Effectively managing team performance and ensuring outputs are achieved within the strategic direction of the AFP.

Building and sustaining mutually beneficial relationships with internal and external networks, in particular key partners across law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

Maintaining knowledge and understanding of the intelligence environment, and relevant Commonwealth legislation.

Maintaining currency in intelligence concepts and methods through ongoing professional development and learning opportunities outside the formal education process.

Assuming accountability for resources, supporting and implementing change management and improvement strategies.

Applying a proven record of ethical behaviour and demonstrated commitment to the workplace.

Essential Requirements

You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.

A Negative Vetting 2 security clearance or the ability to obtain one.

Extensive knowledge and understanding of intelligence concepts and methods.

Proven ability to lead and manage a team of intelligence practitioners within a law enforcement agency, intelligence, defence, federal or state government agency.

A proven ability to set the strategic direction of an intelligence team and deliver operational and organisational outcomes.

Additional Information

This position is an AFP Band 7 level.

This advertisement is to create a merit list for future ongoing or non-ongoing vacancies arising over the next 12 months.

There are anticipated vacancies located in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and Darwin. Successful applicants are expected to be based in the relevant locations.

This role attracts a composite allowance in recognition of expanded working hours, normal patterns of attendance and shift patterns (such as afternoon shifts, weekends and Designated Public Holidays) that are required under the Operations working pattern. In accordance with the AFP Enterprise Agreement, an employee who is required to work in accordance with the Operations working pattern will receive a Core Composite of 22% in addition to their base salary, which will count as salary for superannuation. The Commissioner has the authority to remove a composite from a role.
