The Role

Key Duties:

ASD 4 Database Administrator:

This is a Database administration role to provide reliable and uninterrupted database services for owners and users of multiple systems running on the corporate databases used in ASD.

The successful applicant will:

  • Develop their expertise in managing corporate databases and supporting data owners and users.
  • Create, maintain and follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), based on outcomes of our internal testing, work implementation and environmental changes.
  • Be flexible to meet changing work requirements to ensure the reliability and ongoing enhancements for supported databases.
  • Upskill in a variety of database technologies to meet on-going or new operational requirements.
  • Learn a number of fundamental Oracle and Microsoft technologies such as MSSQL, SQL, table structure, indexes OR
  • Learn a number of fundamental MongoDB technologies such as Operations Manager, JSON, key-value pairs.

ASD 5 Database Administrator:

In addition to duties in the ASD 4 category, the successful applicant will:

  • Mentor junior DBAs in the team.
  • Work on supporting issues of a more technical nature that require investigation and debugging.
  • Learn a number of ASD specific requirements for our Oracle databases such as EUS, RAs, RMAN, Commvault, EMCC, materialized views, GRPs, flashbacks, APEX OR
  • Learn a number of ASD specific requirements for our MongoDB databases such as Replication Server, Sharding, Compacting.

ASD 6 Database Administrator:

In addition to duties in the ASD 4 & 5 categories, the successful applicant will:

  • Be a source of technical expertise in the team on all Database matters, and have the ability to utilise all available resources to come to meaningful conclusions.
  • Have a previous strong and demonstrated working knowledge of Oracle, MongoDB or MSSQL.
  • Work on scripts written and running on Linux or Windows environments.
  • Have a focus on providing clear guidance to the team.
  • Be willing to automate tasks as needed and to make the team more efficient where practical.
  • Master a number of Oracle specific requirements such as PLSQL, Commvault, backups, flashbacks, APEX OR
  • Master a number of MongoDB specific requirements such as Collections, Aggregation, Indexing and all CRUD operations.

About our Team

Mission Data (MD) Division within ASD is responsible for providing the foundational data capabilities to support all of ASD’s functions. We achieve this via the provision of data platforms and services, management of ASD’s mission data, and providing complex analytic development and support, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning capabilities. All roles within MD require knowledge of and strict compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and ASD’s mission and policies requirements

The Databases and Indexing team (DBI) provides a reliable corporate database environment to ensure uninterrupted and reliable database services for owners and users of multiple systems running on the corporate databases used in ASD and wider Defence.
