About the role

We are seeking a Full Time Qualified Scientific Officer to take on the role of Senior Scientist at our Windsor Gardens laboratory.

Your role will be to participate in the day to day operation of the laboratory, following documented processes, ensuring high standards in specimen processing, result authorisation, and equipment maintenance. Duties include general Biochemistry and Haematology work, maintenance of instrumentation and equipment and compliance with accreditation and quality assurance requirements. You’ll work closely with clinicians, consultants, and senior leadership to ensure timely, accurate, and impactful results that directly inform patient care. The preferred applicants will be flexible, punctual, self-motivated, display initiative and be able to work with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities:

Work Process Management:

Organise and prioritise workloads.

Maintain equipment and resolve issues promptly.

Ensure timely turnaround, especially for urgent specimens.

Develop and maintain department methodologies.

Ensure result quality and collaborate with the Pathologist if issues arise.

Specimen Processing:

Process routine pathology specimens and perform quality checks.

Prioritise lab requests and evaluate specimen suitability.

Ensure quality control samples are within acceptable limits.

Result Authorisation:

Validate and authorise results before reporting.

Interpret results and ensure they align with clinical information.

Make decisions on reporting results or repeating tests.

Equipment & Lab Maintenance:

Participate in the upkeep of the lab and equipment.

Ensure preventative maintenance and keep work areas clean and organised.

Quality Control:

Monitor and address any quality control issues.

Review and record details of QC results and actions taken.

Urgent & Abnormal Results:

Ensure critical results are communicated to the responsible person promptly.

Take immediate action to report life-threatening or urgent results.

Other Duties:

Perform other duties as required by the department.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science or a science degree with subjects relevant to the field of Pathology, which has been assessed as by AIMS as being equivalent.

Minimum 3 years’ experience in a Clinical Laboratory.

Relevant experience and qualification in specialised discipline - Biochemistry, Haematology.

High attention to detail and experience working in a fast-paced environment.

Ability to multitask and successfully work as part of a team.

Exceptional communication, time management & organisational skills.

The ability to contribute towards the delivery of customer focused services.

Have own transport and be able to take part in weekend and evening rosters including public holidays.
