About the company
Karlka Recruiting Group has partnered with a State Government Agency to engage a Senior AI Software Engineer. This position is located in their busy Eveleigh, NSW office for an initial 12-month contract.
About the Position
This isn’t your average government tech role. You’ll be joining the only dedicated AI development team within the entire department — a highly agile, product-focused unit tasked with creating generative AI tools that have never been built before.
They’re not maintaining legacy systems — they’re building custom search engines, chat models, and generative AI applications from scratch to support students and teachers across NSW. You’ll collaborate closely with a team of developers and data scientists to translate models into production-ready, scalable tools — with a particular focus on Python, JavaScript (Node/Vue), Azure, and OpenAI technologies.
This is a highly dynamic, forward-thinking environment with fortnightly sprints, a supportive but high-performance culture, and a real appetite for experimentation. If you’re excited by learning on the fly, shipping new features fast, and helping an entire department understand what’s possible with AI — this is the place.
Duties
- Build greenfield AI-powered tools in Python and JavaScript (Node.js, Vue.js, or similar)
- Translate AI models and prompt engineering work into working, scalable software
- Collaborate with data scientists and engineers in sprint-based development cycles
- Design and deploy modern cloud-based applications (Azure)
- Engage in fast-paced, problem-solving-focused environments
- Advocate for AI adoption and help demystify its use to non-technical stakeholders
Requirements/Skills
- 5+ years of software engineering experience (Python and JavaScript essential)
- Strong understanding of REST APIs, full-stack architecture, and cloud platforms (preferably Azure)
- Experience with AI/ML tools — especially language models, generative AI, and OpenAI APIs
- Ability to work across unknowns — flexibility and self-learning are key
- Experience delivering functional code within sprint cycles (fortnightly in this case)
