The City of Canning is seeking a highly capable and experienced People & Performance Business Partner to join our team and play a key role in delivering contemporary HR solutions that support our people and our purpose.
About the role
As a People & Performance Business Partner, you’ll provide expert advice and guidance across all aspects of Human Resources, Employee and Industrial Relations, and organisational development. You’ll work closely with Directors and senior leaders to implement strategic people initiatives, including culture and engagement, workforce planning, and learning and development.
This is a true business partnering role—one that requires a deep understanding of operational environments, the ability to influence at all levels, and a proactive approach to delivering tailored, fit-for-purpose solutions.
What you’ll be doing:
Advising on complex ER/IR matters, including investigations, performance management, and misconduct
Supporting senior recruitment processes and organisational structure reviews
Partnering with internal specialists to deliver culture, engagement, and L&D initiatives
Coaching people leaders through performance reviews and difficult conversations
Leading and contributing to People & Performance projects aligned with strategic goals
Ensuring compliance with the City’s Industrial Agreement, policies, and CEO Instructions
Monitoring workforce health and wellbeing in collaboration with WHS team
What you will bring to the role:
Tertiary qualifications in HR, IR, Psychology, Business, or Commerce
Minimum 7 years’ experience in a HR Business Partner or similar role
Strong ER/IR expertise and the ability to coach and influence people leaders
Demonstrated ability to align people strategies with business goals
Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills
Sound knowledge of payroll, WHS, and return-to-work practices
High level of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality
While not essential, if you are familiar with the below, these would be particularly useful in this role:
Experience in public sector or not-for-profit environments
Certifications in HR frameworks (e.g. DISC, change management, role classification)
