About the Role

The Head of Department (Visual Art) ensures that the curriculum reflects best pedagogical practice and that consistency of teaching and assessment is encouraged and monitored. This role will ensure that departmental staff are supported to deliver a curriculum, which is target orientated, challenging, differentiated and well resourced.

This is a full-time position commencing in January 2026.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Management

To be an active member of the Heads of Department to enable cooperation between departments, develop educational policies and monitor the evaluation of the documentation of curriculum.

To lead and support teachers in their welfare and teaching roles.

To manage the department’s budget.

To ensure the department is well resourced to service the needs of teachers and students.

To ensure effective communication with parents regarding departmental matters.

To promote the achievements of students within the department.

Curriculum and co-curricula

To coordinate the documentation of department curriculum.

To teach departmental curriculum.

To keep abreast of developments in curriculum and pedagogy within the department areas and ensure the communication of this to department staff.

To oversee the evaluation and monitoring of department curriculum to ensure that it meets best practice and is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum.

To implement collaborative strategies to ensure shared planning on Atlas and common assessment within the department.

To implement processes to ensure consistent continuous reporting and feedforward practices across the department.

To implement strategies to promote the Cultures of Thinking within the department curriculum, where appropriate.

To implement strategies to encourage and support the integration of IT skills into the curriculum.

To foster the development of collaborative learning in the classroom.

Staff Related

To provide a motivating environment for staff within the department that celebrates success and challenges underperformance.

To ensure newly recruited teachers are provided with a thorough induction into the department and the College.

To ensure the ongoing monitoring and development of teaching practices within the department through observation of classes and learning walks.

To assist in the implementation of a staff appraisal process within the department.

Teaching Commitment

To have a teaching load.

Personal Skills & Experience

To possess a teaching diploma along with a relevant tertiary qualification and VIT Registration.

To possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and confidence in working with students, staff, parents and external groups and agencies.

To possess a demonstrable, strong leadership experience in a relevant school setting.

To possess a solid and demonstrable track record of knowledge and experience in the appropriate field of learning.

To possess innovative practices in an educational context and an ability to manage change.

To possess the desire to understand and embed Cultures of Thinking in the curriculum.
