This position will identify and connect with temporary migrant workers in Western Australia. It will deliver and motivate participation in activities to increase temporary migrant workers’ awareness and understanding of their workplace rights and obligations under the Migration Act.
About the Protecting Migrant Workers project
This 12-month project will increase the awareness and understanding that temporary migrant workers in WA and their employers have of their workplace rights and obligations under the Migration Act. It will achieve this through a range of activities, including developing and promoting information online and in print targeted at migrant workers in WA to explain workers' rights and safety information. The Protecting Migrant Workers project team will use a workplace and community outreach strategy through unions, community groups and social media. This project will be delivered by UnionsWA in collaboration with the Immigration Advice and Rights Centre (IARC) and the Migrant Workers Centre (MWC).
Responsibilities of the position
· Work collaboratively with UnionsWA staff, affiliated unions and project partners.
· Contribute to the development and implementation of effective outreach organising and education plans.
· Identify, connect with and maintain a network of temporary migrant workers in Western Australia.
· Undertake domestic travel as required.
· Maximise temporary migrant engagement with/ participation in project activities.
· Provide accurate information and increase understanding of workplace rights and obligations under the Migration Act.
· Support engagement with the Workplace Justice Visa and Strengthening Reporting Protections pilots
· Facilitate referrals for legal assistance through to the Immigration Advice and Rights Centre (IARC)
· Support the completion of grant progress reports
· Other duties as required.
Selection criteria
Essential
· Research and analytical skills
· Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills
· Ability to develop and implement outreach organising plans
· Understanding of adult education principles
· Experience in one or more of the following fields: training and education; organising/ community development; industrial and/ or migration law.
· Current C Class Driver’s License
· Commitment to the principles of unionism
Desirable
· Ability to communicate verbally and/ or in writing in a language other than English
· Previous experience working with Unions
· Previous experience working with migrant populations
