TITLE: Gardener – Turf Maintenance

LOCATION: Government House, Hobart, Tasmania

AWARD: Governor of Tasmania Employee Award & Governor of Tasmania Employee Agreement 2022

CLASSIFICATION: Band 3 – Salary Range ($74,783 - $80,835)

HOURS: Full-time, nine-day fortnight

REPORTS TO: Estate Gardens Manager

The Position

Maintain all turf on the Estate including, but not limited to, recreational tennis and croquet/bowling lawns, paddocks, main drive, and rose gardens. Assist in the maintenance of ornamental garden beds, hedges, vineyard, and other areas of the Estate as required.

Primary Duties:

Maintain, renovate and prepare fine turf and sports surfaces. As required, mow, scarify, core, fertilise and spray herbicides and pesticides.

Provide specialised turf advice and assistance for garden staff colleagues.

Maintain ornamental garden beds, including weeding, pruning, fertilising, mulching and planting out.

Operate, install and maintain basic irrigation systems.

Operate motorised equipment, including rotary and cylinder lawn mowers, scarifier, corer, zero-turn mower, tractors, line trimmer/brush cutter and hedge trimmer.

Provide assistance across other areas of the Estate as required.

Selection Criteria

Demonstrated experience in turf renovation and maintenance, including tennis courts and bowling greens or similar, relevant experience.

Demonstrated ability to make decisions and provide advice, including the development and supervision of turf management plans.

Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a close-knit team to achieve high standards of garden outcomes.

Demonstrated ability to safely operate and maintain power and motorised equipment relevant to the position.

Highly Desirable Requirements:

Minimum Certificate III in Horticulture

Minimum two years’ experience in an equivalent position

Desirable Requirements:

Medium Rigid truck license

Industry White Card

Workplace Level II First Aid

Chainsaw operator’s license

Tractor operator’s license

Registration to work with vulnerable people, or the ability to gain registration
