The Role
The Aboriginal Private Rental Assistance Program (APRAP) Plus Worker role sits within Family Services Team in the Homelessness Programs. The APRAP Plus Worker will provide outreach service for households living in or entering private rental tenancies. APRAP position works alongside the APRAP broker to provide additional support to households to establish or maintain their housing.
APRAP Plus is designed to:
• Provide time limited outreach to support tenancies
• Address issues which are contributing to the risk of tenancy breakdown
• Achieve outcomes that lead to successful, sustainable private rental tenancies
• Reduce preventable exits from private rental
• Prevent homelessness
• APRAP Plus is not primarily an office-based position, while APRAP Plus will work alongside the Private Rental Broker, it is an outreach position. Staff will primarily work with clients in the communities where they live. APRAP Plus is not designed to assist community who have existing support from other housing support programs.
About you
• Relevant qualifications in community services and social housing; and/or experience in working with Aboriginal people experiencing or at risk of homelessness and/or a demonstrated understanding of the issues associated with homelessness and their effects on the Aboriginal Community.
• Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and commitment to the Aboriginal community
• Demonstrated understanding of the unique challenges and social issues faced by the Aboriginal community, including the impacts of racism within the private rental market
• Demonstrated skills in case management
• Good organisation and time management skills
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi skilled team
• Skills in working independently, with initiative and as a team member
• Willingness and ability to work within and contribute to the vision, purpose and core values of the organisation.
• Able to develop positive relationships with clients and work within a stressful environment
• Demonstrate commitment to the care and support of Aboriginal people needing to establish, support and maintain tenancies who have complex support needs.
• Knowledge of safe and appropriate culturally centred practices for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander focused services, including employment of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.
• Demonstrated understanding of social, physical, economical, and cultural strengths and challenges affecting Aboriginal communities and their ability to access adequate and quality services.
• Understanding of the purpose and expectations of the Victorian Child Safe Standards and demonstrated commitment to contributing to a child safe organisation in both practice and culture.
Desirable
• Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
• Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations.
