About Us

In 2010, The Department of Education and Monash University collaborated to develop a secondary school designed to advance student with an interest in sciences, mathematics and associated technologies. John Monash Science School is the expression of this unique educational partnership. Monash University has committed significant resources and has dedicated staff in both the Faculties of Education and Science to support students and staff of our school.

The vision for John Monash Science School is to be a nationally and internationally recognised centre for excellence in innovative research-based teaching and learning in the later years of secondary science, mathematics, associated technologies, resource development and pedagogy. The school will contribute to Victoria's, and the Notion's, long term economic, social, cultural and environmental goals through delivery of high quality and innovative education.

John Monash Science School will:

engage students through innovation in a relevant and integrated curriculum and investigation-based learning approaches;

provide pathways into senior secondary and university studies for high achievers pursuing Science and Mathematics;

develop high quality effective teaching strategies to be shared amongst teachers throughout the state; and

provide ongoing up to date knowledge in rapidly advancing areas of science.

Learning Environment and Curriculum

At John Monash Science School, we focus on providing students not only an education of highest academic standard, but one which also encourages independent, creative thinking. Working with like-minded peers, expert teachers, and taking advantage of world class facilities, students at our school are challenged and supported to grow and develop holistically in order to achieve their goals.

Inquiry based learning is one teaching and learning approach at our school. Some of the documented benefits of this style of learning are that it:

JMSS is currently seeking passionate and dedicated casual relief teachers in the areas of English and Mathematics for Years 10 to 12.
While preference will be given to applicants with expertise in these subjects, teachers from other disciplines are also encouraged to apply.

About John Monash Science School

Clayton, VIC, Australia

John Monash Science School is the first school of its kind in Victoria and one of only three such specialist science providers in Australia. Opening for the first time in 2010 with 197 Year 10 students, the school is now at capacity with 640 students from Years 10 to 12 and over 80 full and part time members of staff. Some 25 of these are Education Support staff.

The Leadership Team comprises three Principal Class Officers, nine Leading Teachers, the Business Manager and the Manager of Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives. The facilities and infrastructure are multi-storey and based on a ‘learning commons’ design to facilitate the variety of flexible teaching and learning approaches characteristic of the school. The school hosts leading-edge technology resources which have provided an ideal opportunity to further enhance and enrich learning. Monash University provided the site for the school building at the southern end of the Science, Technology, Research and Innovation Precinct (STRIP).
