About The Team

Murdoch University is home to the only Veterinary School in Western Australia, and its prestigious teaching farms provides the opportunity that enables students to have 'hands-on" approach to learning and research.

Your New Role!

Coordinate daily operations at Murdoch University's farm unit, ensuring animals are well cared for and available for teaching, research and diagnostics. Play a key role in maintaining high standards of care and safety, and step up as second in command when needed. The Senior Farm Officer leads a small team of 2-3 people and will be required to do timely documentation of animal movements and communications to other team members.

  • Complete tasks associated with animal welfare, feeding and cleaning (observe livestock for signs of illnesses or health issues) and report any unusual observations immediately to the Farm Manager
  • Perform tasks such as backlining, drenching, vaccination, tagging, castrating, tail docking, crutching when required, condition scoring, weighing and scanning/NLIS scanning, frequent use of MOBBLE software App, health checks/treatments, classing/drafting (by sex, weight, age, type, class for market specification.
  • Perform mustering, drafting, trucking, loading/unloading livestock (fit for loading) using low stress handling skills.
  • Operate and maintain farm machinery - various tractors, quadbikes, mower, forklift, trucks, hay bailing equipment, seeding equipment, and spraying equipment
  • Maintain appropriate records as requested and an up to date knowledge of current safety requirements across the farm (including farm biosecurity assessing, preventing and procedures).
  • Have knowledge of animal breeding techniques (natural/A. I) and raising procedures using industry standards and monthly stock takes as required.
  • Ensure requirements of Animal Ethics Committee are complied with and maintained for the off-campus farms.
  • Act in the position of Farms Supervisor whilst the Farms Supervisor is on leave
  • Maintain farm equipment, conduct weekly vehicle inspections, carry out minor repairs and servicing, this may include but not be limited to mechanical, auto electrical, hydraulic and welding jobs

What you'll bring to the role:

  • Completion of Year 12 of Certificate III with a minimum 3 years farm experience
  • Previous experience in supervising or leading a team
  • Experience in processing livestock, crutching, welding, Tractor operation, chainsaw, mower, whipper snippers and other small machinery handling knowledge and maintenance (chainsaw Ticket required or ability to obtain one)
  • Experience and understanding OH&S guidelines/JSA's/SOP's as well as using personal protection and safety equipment
  • Ability to understand, educate, assed and prevent spread in relation to farm biosecurity procedures
