The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to fill the position of Logistics Project Manager for our Census Logistics, Mail & Print team located in Belconnen. This is a temporary position up to two years duration. The successful applicant will initially be engaged on an 18 month contract, with a further contract extension up to six months.

About the role

The Logistics, Mail and Print team manages end-to-end integrated logistical services, material production, and mail and print capabilities to support 2026 Census field operations.

We seek an enthusiastic team member to oversee the logistics component of the Census 2026 special strategies initiative to support the collection of Census data from special dwellings (e.g. hotels, hospitals, boarding schools, retirement villages and caravan parks, etc) throughout Australia during Census operations in 2026.

Key responsibilities include:

• manage a small team responsible for ensuring the success of the special strategies logistics work program for the 2026 Census
• liaise with stakeholders to understand specifications and requirements for equipment and documentation
• gather requirements for quality assurance and operational management of logistics operations in the special strategies space
• collaborate closely with contracted logistics and manufacturing providers to ensure correct equipment and documentation is produced
• undertake internal and external stakeholder liaison, including workshops, and creation of Standard Operating Procedures
• provide direct oversight and coordination with the logistics contractor to ensure the accurate fulfilment, consignment, and timely delivery of equipment and materials to field personnel
• oversee packing, delivery, and post-Census return or destruction of materials.

About you

The successful candidate will have all, or most of the following:

• ability to exercise sound judgment and effective decision-making in a fast-paced operational environment during Census operations
• ability to develop an understanding of the field strategies, equipment and material requirements of Census specials strategies field operations
• strong planning and coordination skills
• initiative, adaptability, and a team-focused mindset
• ability to drive liaison and negotiation with stakeholders to ensure specifications and requirements for equipment and material is agreed and provided in a timely manner.
