About the role
We are seeking a motivated independent individual to carry out world class research in the areas of microbiology, geomicrobiology and genomics in the School of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS), and across schools in Curtin University. The applicant will work in parallel with the Director of Curtin’s Western Australia Organic and Isotope Geochemistry Centre (WA-OIGC) and Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow Prof Kliti Grice and centre researchers and students on organic geochemical, paleontological and energy related research. The individual will also teach in the broad area of Environmental Earth Sciences and geomicrobiology.
The appointee will be an expert will have significant experience in geomicrobiology, and bioinformatics and genomics of sediments and lakes, as well as environmental mineralogy and inorganic geochemistry. They should have demonstrated experience working with organic biogeochemists. The applicant should have a broad understanding of applications of microbiology, climate change and mining rehabilitation, including the techniques relevant to the research.
The appointee will have their own research program and collaborate with researchers in Curtin University and at other research institutions and have a strong record of securing research grants with industry partners.
Key responsibilities
- Research leader in area of geomicrobiology within WA-OIGC, in EPS, and across other schools in Curtin University.
- Publish high quality international peer-reviewed journal articles in their area of research.
- Contribute to teaching of graduate and undergraduate in the Earth Sciences curriculum, including developing and delivering practicals, conducting student field trips, and marking/assessments.
- Develop internal and external collaborative projects with industry, academia and government organisations.
- Contribute to the leadership of WA-OIGC, the School of EPS, and the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
- Contribute to the school and university community through internal service roles, collaborative teaching, research, and student supervision, and external activities relevant to the discipline.
- Engage in community outreach and science communication
Selection criteria
- A doctoral qualification in microbiology/ geobiology and sedimentary inorganic geochemistry.
- Demonstrated record of PhD and undergraduate scholar supervision.
- An established record of research outputs in international peer reviewed journals.
- An established record of grant success relative to opportunity.
- An established record of industry engagement.
- A demonstrated ability to attract industry funding.
- A demonstrated high level of communication and interpersonal skills with a commitment to the development of collegial and supportive working environment and the ability to interact with students and staff with diverse and/or cultural backgrounds.
- Demonstrated record as an external consultant or reviewer of research proposals.
- Demonstrated high level teaching skill and a demonstrated reflective approach to teaching delivery.
