About the role

We are seeking a self-motivated and compassionate Community Mental Health Practitioner for a fixed-term, part-time opportunity (26.6 hours per week) at our Youth Step Up Step Down (YSUSD) residential service in Caboolture. YSUSD is a short-term, recovery-focused mental health program for young people aged 16 to 21, delivered in partnership with the local health service. The program offers a supportive, therapeutic environment as a ‘step up’ alternative to hospital admission or a ‘step down’ transition from hospital back into the community.

In this role, you will deliver person-centred, recovery-oriented support to young people to help them achieve their recovery goals, build capacity to live safely in the community, develop daily routines and independent living skills, and strengthen social and community connections. This position requires flexibility to work a 24/7 rotating roster, including night shifts, weekdays, weekends, and sleepovers.

Key responsibilities

  • Support young people to return to their community, live independently and enjoy a meaningful life through a staged approach to recovery.
  • Purposefully engage with young people using techniques including: Brief intervention, Motivational interviewing and coaching, Family inclusive practice, Trauma informed practice, Conflict resolution.
  • Plan and deliver group programs that aid young people to build their skills and focus on recovery.
  • Support family and carer roles through understanding their concerns and the provision of information, education and referrals.
  • Collaborate with a range of services and the community to ensure a co-ordinated, integrated response to people’s recovery goals.
  • Contribute to the day to day operations of the residential service through undertaking a range of housekeeping duties.

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) in Mental Health, Peer Work, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy or other health-related field.
  • Hold a current First Aid and CPR certificate and perform these duties as required as part of the role.
  • Expertise in working with young people with mental health issues, complex needs and interacting with families and carers.
  • Proven capability to implement therapeutic, recovery oriented frameworks and practices including risk mitigation, trauma informed care and family inclusive practice.
  • Ability to provide proof of vaccination against vaccine preventable diseases or willingness to obtain required vaccinations per Queensland Health partnership.
