The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to fill the position of Mail Operations Manager for our Census Data Capture Centre located in Dandenong South.
This is a temporary position up to two years duration. The successful applicant will initially be engaged on an 18 month contract, with a further contract extension up to six months.
About the role
- oversee the daily logistics of warehouse and mail operation to ensure timely, efficient service delivery
- monitor team output and performance, meeting critical deadlines
- manage and allocate resources based on project-specific skills and workstream needs
- support a safe working environment, including the implementation and adherence of Work Health and Safety (WHS) policies
- foster cross-functional collaboration and maintain communication with internal stakeholders
- document and assist with the management of operational risks
- coordinate the movement and handling of materials from logistics partners (e.g. Australia Post)
- oversee core activities such as:
o barcode registration and receipt handling
o operation of envelope opening machinery
o form preparation for scanning
o secure storage and controlled destruction post data capture
- lead or support smaller work units as needed (e.g. ancillary mail processing).
About you
The successful candidate will possess all, or most of the following:
- experience managing operational teams or complex warehousing programs
- strong planning and coordination skills in high-pressure or high-throughput environments
- an ability to guide, support and develop staff across diverse teams
- sound judgment and effective decision-making in fast-paced settings
- high-level communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- an understanding of WHS requirements and how they apply to daily operations
- initiative, adaptability, and a team-focused mindset
- a commitment to creating an inclusive, positive workplace culture.
