Practice Lead – Financial Counsellor

The Indigenous Consumer Assistance Network Ltd (ICAN) is seeking an experienced and values-driven Practice Lead - Financial Counsellor to support the delivery of ethical, client-centred services across regional and remote communities in north and far north Queensland, including the Torres Strait.

ICAN is a not-for-profit organisation that delivers financial counselling, financial capability services, including consumer education, and systemic advocacy services. With a strong focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, our vision is to empower Indigenous Consumers through culturally safe, strengths-based practice.
About the Role
As a Practice Lead, you’ll support the day-to-day work of financial counsellors who deliver frontline services across regional and remote Queensland. While this is a practice leadership role, it does not provide formal professional supervision. Instead, you’ll walk alongside your colleagues, helping them develop their technical skills, manage casework quality, and uphold ethical, trauma-informed service delivery within ICAN’s framework.
This could be either an onsite or remote position that is ideal for someone with the ability to work independently while maintaining strong team connections through virtual collaboration and occasional travel.
Key Responsibilities
Review casework and provide technical guidance
Learn about and work with others to apply ICAN’s Sustainable Livelihoods Practice framework to build client-focused, integrated practice
Review file management, client advice, and time management in line with work plans
Identify areas for individual development and lead change where needed
Identify the need for professional development for individual financial counsellors
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of ethical frameworks and consumer protection legislation
Have developed an understanding of client database and an eye for continuous improvement
Assist staff in identifying systemic issues for advocacy purposes
Participate in team meetings and planning sessions; mentor and build resilience in others
Support a collaborative culture grounded in unconditional positive regard and cultural safety
Who You Are – Selection Criteria
To be considered for this position, applicants must address the following criteria in their cover letter:
Qualifications and Accreditation
Diploma of Financial Counselling
Current accredited member of a recognised financial counselling peak body.
Experience and Sector Knowledge
At least 3 years full-time equivalent experience as an accredited financial counsellor or equivalent
Deep understanding of financial counselling and capability technical requirements and ethical obligations
Awareness of the impacts of intergenerational trauma and poverty on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
Understanding of the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework
Practice Support and Communication
Proven ability to build rapport, offer constructive feedback, and guide peer learning
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to support casework quality
Ability to help colleagues reflect on practice, creditor communications, and systemic issues
Leadership, Integrity and Teamwork
Demonstrates fairness, resilience, and collaborative values
Engages in mentoring, supports team wellbeing, and contributes to a positive culture
Committed to maintaining their professional support, supervision, and development
Technical Proficiency and Organisational Skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office and comfortable using databases and reporting systems
Ability to comply with policies, escalate issues appropriately, and use reporting templates
Sound understanding of internal governance and systems advocacy tools
Cultural Safety and Remote Readiness
Willingness and ability to lead practice in a culturally safe, trauma-informed manner
Comfortable working remotely and engaging in regular virtual communication
Willing to travel occasionally to regional and remote locations as needed
