Aurukun Shire Council (ASC) is an Indigenous community with a population of around 1400 people. Council provides a variety of services to the community that include provision of education, health, community, and welfare services; operation of airport, postal agencies; development and maintenance of roads and housing. Funding is received through both State and Federal governments.
About the Role
The Environmental Health Managers role is to lead and protect, promote and improve public health to prevent people from being adversely impacted by their environment. This work includes inspecting, educating, project and program management, assessing planning and monitoring.
Key Accountabilities
Manage the Environmental Health Teams time and resources to ensure that work is completed efficiently and on schedule within the regulatory framework requirements.
Identify customer and community needs and clearly communicate to ensure that there is a shared understanding of the possible outcomes to be achieved.
Develop and implement environmental health promotion programs and education strategies to raise public health awareness.
Oversee and report regular monitoring, inspections, testing of both Council and Commercial businesses to ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations, including
Food premises
Water and wastewater
Animal welfare
Waste and Recycling
Community Health
Contribute to delivering a range of public and environmental health services that aim to protect and promote health, prevent the incidence of infectious diseases, safeguard the environment, and enhance quality of life in the community.
Promote Council and its policies to the community
Develop a high level of morale and harmony within the Aurukun based team.
Selection Criteria
Essential
Cert III Environmental Science or Public Health
Knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, with ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Indigenous people.
Significant experience in a community setting managing community health and hygiene, food and water safety, animal welfare and control, waste systems monitoring.
Communication, consultative, interpersonal and negotiation skills (both oral and written), with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with relevant stakeholders at strategic and operational levels.
High level analytical and problem-solving skills.
Class C Manual Drivers Licence
Knowledge and understanding of workplace health and safety issues as they relate to the position
Experience using a range of computer software packages, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
A strong customer focus and an ability to build strong customer relationships
Strong organisational capabilities with attention to accuracy and detail.
Desirable
Demonstrated commitment to the local community
Local government and/or regional work experience
Understanding of legislation, or ability to acquire legislative knowledge of Aurukun Shire Council Local Laws.
