ABOUT THE ROLE

This is a 12 month fixed term opportunity.

As an Aboriginal Engagement Officer, you will be an integral part of the Beyond YJS program, actively contributing to the delivery of essential services to young individuals involved in the youth justice system.

Your role will involve providing practical support, encouragement, and guidance to young people on community orders in the Perth metropolitan region and those detained at Banksia Hill Detention Centre.

You will use culture as a tool to connect, guide and support profession and culturally secure engagement processes.

You will work closely to support other team members, including qualified professionals, to foster a positive environment that supports the rehabilitation and reintegration of these young individuals into society.

Key responsibilities include:

Build rapport and establish trusting relationships with young people

offering non-judgmental support and encouragement

Assist young individuals in identifying their strengths, interests, and personal goals

Plan and facilitate engaging group activities and workshops to promote positive behaviour, skill development, and emotional wellbeing

ESSENTIAL SELECTION CRITERIA

Aboriginality

Minimum Certificate III qualifications in a relevant discipline (Welfare, Community Services)

An understanding of issues and challenges facing Aboriginal young people and families involved in the justice system.

An understanding of the importance healing, a strong Aboriginal identity and the impact of trauma.

Demonstrated ability to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and community.

Demonstrated ability to be part of a team in order to deliver a quality service and achieve client outcomes.

Demonstrated interpersonal and written communication skills.

Demonstrable commitment to empowering and respecting children and young people.

Demonstrated ability to provide safe environments for children and young people and protect them from abuse and neglect.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

WA Working with Children Card

Police Clearance (dated within the last 3 months)

Department of Justice Clearance (we'll help successful candidates apply)

WA Drivers Licence
