Who are we?
Established in 1991, Danila Dilba Health Service (DDHS) is an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation committed to providing culturally appropriate, comprehensive primary health care services and community development within the Biluru (Aboriginal) community of the Yilli Rreung (Greater Darwin) Region in the Northern Territory.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Working under the guidance of the Child Health Nurse, the Family Support Worker will build strong, trusting relationships with families, drawing on cultural and community knowledge. This role supports and helps coordinate the child health program within DDHS clinical services, focusing on encouraging families to engage in child neurodevelopmental screening. The Family Support Worker promotes child safety and family wellbeing through a child-centred, strength-based, trauma-informed approach that respects Aboriginal culture and community strengths.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Work with a Child Health Nurse to support Aboriginal families through health programs that respect culture and catch problems early.
- Connect families with healthcare services by doing basic assessments, making referrals, and working with other teams and organisations.
- Teach families about healthy living and use tools like ASQ-TRAK to check how children are growing and learning.
- Help plan and organise health programs and community events.
- Help the team with feedback and suggestions to make the program better.
- Help families at home and in the community through visits.
- Help make communication clear and respectful between families and the team.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential
- Keep confidential information private and follow workplace policies, especially when dealing with sensitive client and community information.
- Communicate well with people from different backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, showing respect for their culture.
- Work effectively with healthcare teams, including doctors, nurses, and other health professionals, to provide coordinated, culturally appropriate care.
- Work well as part of a team with good time management and organisational skills to get tasks done on time.
- Use computers confidently, including client databases, information systems, and Microsoft Office programs.
- Understand how social issues affect Aboriginal health, things like racism, overcrowding, food security, and historical injustices.

EMPLOYMENT IS SUBJECT TO
- Willing to undergo a Police Check.
- Ability and willingness to obtain a Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card).
- Current driver's licence
- Current CPR certificate or the preparedness to gain one within 6 months of commencement.
- Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or an exemption as listed on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) be submitted.
- Full rights to work in Australia.
