Posted 3 days ago
About QIMR Berghofer:
QIMR Berghofer is a world-leading translational medical research institute focused on improving health by developing new diagnostics, better treatments and prevention strategies, specifically in the areas of Cancer, Infection and Inflammation, Brain and Mental Health, and Population Health. Based in Herston, Brisbane and working in close collaboration with clinicians and other research institutes, QIMR Berghofer is home to more than 600 scientists, students and non-research staff.
About the Metabolomics Facility:
The QIMR Berghofer Metabolomics Facility is part of the institute’s Scientific Services Division, and uses liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) in both targeted and untargeted modalities to analyse samples and measure the metabolome from a variety of medical research projects. The end goal is to understand the biochemical and metabolomic changes that occur during the onset, progression, or as a consequence of the disease under investigation.
The facility uses Agilent UHPLC systems coupled to QQQ and Q-ToF mass spectrometers and has a number of established targeted and untargeted methods, as well as others currently under development. The targeted methods aim to specifically and selectively measure and quantify known biochemical analytes in the samples. The untargeted methods aim to provide a broader overview of the biochemical composition of the sample, providing semi-quantitative and comparative information.
Role Purpose / Responsibilities:
Applications are invited for a highly-experienced analyst to join the Metabolomics Facility.
The following duties will apply:
- Undertaking metabolomics laboratory work to deliver high quality metabolomics data
- Discussing with clients and staff to plan experiments, metabolomics methods, experimental design and collection or preparation of material
- Utilising existing protocols and methods for the delivery of researcher requirements
- Applying expertise to the development of protocols and methods for the delivery of researcher requirements
- Providing preliminary data analysis summaries to researchers where required
- Consulting with researchers to solve technical problems and interpret results
- Preparing detailed reports and contributing to the preparation of manuscripts and presentation of results for publication
- Calibration and maintenance of LC-MS instruments and co-ordination with vendor and/or service personnel for instrument troubleshooting, repairs and maintenance
- Assisting with general laboratory operations
- Provide exceptional metabolomics services to researchers within QIMR Berghofer, including:
- Train staff and students to undertake metabolomics research, including experimental design, sample preparation, instrument operation and maintenance, and data analysis
- Maintain currency in multiple facets of the metabolomics workflow i.e. from design to data processing and analysis
- Utilise extensive expertise and experience to continuously improve the service
- Contribute to the operations within the Proteomics Facility, where appropriate
- Ensure work practices comply with the requirements of the Work Health and Safety Act, related legislative requirements and the Institute’s Work Health & Safety (WH&S) policies and procedures.
About you:
You will have a PhD in Life Sciences (or an equivalent related discipline), with a focus on metabolomics, or with substantial metabolomics components. You will have extensive (>5 years) experience in metabolomics research or service delivery in a medical research or clinical environment; including troubleshooting, maintenance and management of mass spectrometers, liquid chromatography systems and other equipment commonly used in a metabolomics laboratory. You will also have extensive experience in the development and application of innovative metabolomics methodologies, and the ability to utilise your longstanding expertise and experience to continuously improve the service.
You will need to have excellent communication skills, including communicating metabolomics concepts to medical personnel and researchers, as well as the data processing and analysis methods applied to their data. You will have a demonstrated ability to work in a team and to build relationships with internal and external researchers, and to manage various other stakeholder relationships. High level organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities within specified time frames with minimal supervision are important requirements of this role.
Experience in other areas of the -omics sciences, in particular mass spectrometry-based disciplines such as proteomics, would be highly desirable.
