About the Role

The Registered mental health nurse (RPN3) delivers care within a custodial setting, practicing within a recovery framework and using sound judgement to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and maintain a high standard of patient care. In doing so, the Mental Health Nurse recognises the needs of the individual within the boundaries set by the profession, Forensicare and correctional service.

Working within a multi-disciplinary team and with many key stakeholders inclusive of GEO Health Care, Corrections Victoria and Justice health

The position is Full Time and based at Melbourne Assessment Prison Melbourne CBD

Your primary functions will be, but not limited to

  • Comprehensive assessment and treatment of patients in a custodial setting.
  • Provision of crisis intervention assessment to prisoners throughout the facility
  • Formulation and documentation of patient centred care plans.
  • Completion of initial and ongoing risk assessment of patients and liaison with the interdisciplinary team to provide a safe environment.
  • Administration of medication to patients and monitoring of the effect on patients.

What you need:

  • Postgraduate qualification in Mental Health Nursing or equivalent.
  • Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulations Agency (AHPRA).
  • An awareness of the organisational structure and policies and procedures.
  • A thorough knowledge of current psychiatric nursing practices.
  • Knowledge of the relevant legislation.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently undertake comprehensive health assessments of patients.

Forensicare (Victorian Institute of Forensic Mental Health) is the state-wide specialist provider of forensic mental health services in Victoria. Forensicare is the only agency in Victoria that provides clinical forensic mental health services which span all components of the mental health and criminal justice sectors – giving Forensicare a unique perspective on mental health and public safety issues. It is able to provide specialist forensic mental health services tailored to meet the specific needs of both sectors.

We provide forensic mental health services for people:

with a serious mental illness in the criminal justice system

at risk of offending who pose a risk to themselves or others

referred from the general mental health system for specialist advice, support and/or treatment.

Forensicare’s primary focus is the provision of clinical services within a recovery framework. These services include the effective assessment, treatment and management of forensic patients, prisoners and clients.
