Job location:
This position is based at Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, operating out of the Marrmak Unit, where Forensicare provides specialist mental health services within a 20-bed residential program for female prisoners.
In addition, we also provide an intensive outreach program to mainstream, protection and management prisoners and a therapeutic day program.
There is a strong focus on providing a healing environment, not only for people in prisons, but also one that supports the well-being and safety of all staff. This approach recognises that many women who are imprisoned are also victims of crime and have challenging mental health conditions as a result.
The word Marrmak is from the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people meaning 'safe'.
About the Role:
The Psychologist (Grade 2) provides clinical psychology expertise to the Marrmak Unit and Forensicare's services at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre. The Psychologist conducts treatment and assessments for women admitted to the unit and provides consultation and advice on clinical matters to the multi-disciplinary team. The psychologist also provides outpatient and outreach services to women across the prison location and provides advice to Corrections Victoria and other stakeholders regarding the management and support of women in their care. The psychologist may be involved in scholarly writing and research will complete psychological reports as required.
Duties:
- Provides a full range of psychological services and advice on the management and treatment of patients.
- Conducts psychological assessment of a range of mental health issues, including high-prevalence mental health disorders, personality disorders, psychosis and trauma symptomatology
- Provides individual and/or group interventions to promote use of effective coping skills for managing mental health difficulties
- Provides consultation and liaison with Corrections Victoria and Forensicare concerning patients from the Marrmak program and throughout DPFC.
- Provides individual and/or group interventions as appropriate.
- Contributes to patient risk assessment and risk management in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team.
- Providing recovery focused, evidenced based psychological interventions
- Provides discipline-specific contributions to clinical practice and to program development.
- Provides specialist psychological, psychometric and psychodiagnostic assessments and reports where necessary.
About You:
- Masters or Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited course or equivalent, or a Doctorate degree in Forensic Psychology from an APAC accredited course or equivalent.
- Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulations Agency (AHPRA).
- Endorsement or eligibility for endorsement by AHPRA in the area of clinical psychology and/or forensic psychology.
- Demonstrated commitment to mental health consumer recovery.
- Experience in providing psychological services in forensic mental health and related settings is preferable.
- A good understanding of the current psychological approaches to working with female clients experiencing mental health issues in the forensic mental health setting.
- Knowledge and experience working with personality disorder and high prevalence mental health disorders. Knowledge of relevant legislation, the mental health system, and the criminal justice system.
