About Western Sydney University

Ranked among the top 2% of universities worldwide, Western Sydney University is a research-led institution with campuses across Greater Western Sydney, Vietnam, Indonesia, and soon India. Home to nearly 50,000 students and over 3,500 staff, we’re known for delivering world-class education, driving meaningful impact, and placing first globally in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings in 2022 and 2023 for our commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

About the School of Medicine

Established in 2004, the School of Medicine is deeply committed to addressing the health needs of Greater Western Sydney and regional Australia through innovative education, impactful research, and strong community partnerships. Our vertically and horizontally integrated Doctor of Medicine (MD) program is delivered across metropolitan and rural campuses—including our Rural Clinical Schools in Bathurst and Lismore—and is built around four key themes: patient care, community health, professional development, and scientific foundations of medicine.

The School has forged strong ties with Local Health Districts particularly within the rural setting of Bathurst in collaboration with Western NSW LHD. As a partner in the Joint Program in Medicine with Charles Sturt University, the Bathurst Rural Clinical School plays a vital and innovative role in continuing to grow the delivery of rural clinical training and supporting regional health workforce development.

The Opportunity: Rural Clinical Dean

We are seeking a passionate, strategic, and innovative medical educator and clinician to lead our Bathurst Rural Clinical School as Rural Clinical Dean. This senior academic leadership role will shape and deliver clinical education aligned with rural health priorities, using innovation to both expand research capacity, and strengthen relationships with Western NSW Local Health District and the broader community.

As a senior member of the School Executive, the Rural Clinical Dean will contribute to school-wide strategic planning and governance while directly overseeing teaching, learning, and student experience within the Bathurst region. You will champion curriculum innovation, support interprofessional learning, foster staff development, and promote inclusive and responsive rural health education.

You’ll also have an opportunity to lead transformative rural health research and play a key role in securing ongoing funding, building collaborative networks, and increasing rural visibility and impact.

About You

We are seeking an experienced clinician and academic with a passion for rural health, education, and service. You will be committed to improving health outcomes in rural and remote communities and demonstrate a deep understanding of the rural health landscape.

For appointment at Associate Professor level, you will have:

  • Current medical registration with AHPRA and Fellowship of a relevant Australian/Australasian Specialist Medical College
  • Eligibility for credentialing to practice at local health services
  • A postgraduate qualification (PhD, MD or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated leadership in medical education and curriculum delivery
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate and HDR students
  • Strong record of research output relevant to rural health
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and collaborate across sectors

For appointment at Professor level, you will also demonstrate:

  • International recognition in your field and a record of research leadership
  • Proven experience in senior academic governance and operational management
  • Success in fostering high-performing academic teams and inter-institutional partnerships
  • A track record of sustained contributions to the profession, community, and University sector

Why Join Us?

This is a unique opportunity to lead and influence medical education in a rural setting, with the full support of a progressive, globally-ranked university and access to modern resources and a strong academic support network. You’ll shape the future of rural health workforce development, while enjoying the collegiality, natural beauty, and strong sense of community that regional NSW offers.
