Job description
The role supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and families to stay strong, stay connected, and stay safe—particularly when dealing with the impacts of family violence, sexual violence, relationship breakdown, child protection involvement, and issues related to employment or discrimination.
Grounded in culture, community, and women’s self-determination, the role works alongside clients to support their engagement with the Centre’s legal and social support services in a way that is safe, respectful, and empowering.
Tasks and responsibilities
Build strong, culturally respectful relationships with First Nations clients to support their engagement with legal and support services
Facilitate culturally safe engagement between First Nations clients and non-First Nations staff at the Centre, bridging communications and helping staff to identify, understand and respond to cultural needs and obligations as part of their legal assistance.
Provide high quality culturally safe support and case management to clients, including walking alongside clients through legal processes and accompanying them to appointments and court events.
Undertake holistic assessments of client needs and support safety planning in collaboration with lawyers and social workers.
Qualifications & experience
Qualifications in community services, social work, Indigenous Trauma Recovery Practice or similar, OR working towards qualifications OR demonstrated experience in service delivery with First Nations clients.
Hold or eligible for Working with Vulnerable People registration (ACT). For further information please refer to Access Canberra.

WLC is a community legal centre specialising in family law, migration, employment, discrimination and sexual harassment and sexual violence. WLC provides legal services within a multi-disciplinary, trauma informed practice model that incorporates social work, cultural support and collaborative flexible services to support women, trans and gender diverse people.
