About This Opportunity

This five-year Research Fellowship offers a unique and exciting opportunity to conduct applied research in the cross-disciplinary field of geometallurgy. The role focuses on leveraging data from a variety of characterisation technologies to develop predictive insights into the metallurgical and geoenvironmental properties of orebodies. The Research Fellow will have the opportunity to build a strong research profile and gain national and international recognition in this evolving discipline. In addition to research, the Fellow will also contribute to service and engagement activities within The University of Queensland.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Research: Conduct high-quality, applied geometallurgical research using best practice methodologies, enhance national/international recognition of research at the Sustainable Minerals Institute, collaborate on research projects, seek and manage research funding, publish in peer reviewed international research journals and conference presentations/publications and development of open-access white papers, participate in project discussions, contribute to commercialisation of UQ intellectual property.
  • Teaching: Whilst no formal teaching commitment is required in this role, the Research Fellow will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and delivery of teaching materials and training modules in the field of geometallurgy.
  • Supervision and Researcher Development: Supervise students, recruit and manage employees, provide performance feedback and training, resolve conflicts, and ensure correct remuneration and benefits.
  • Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.

About You
  • A PhD in the discipline area (geometallurgy) or a related field (geology/geoscience, mining/metallurgical engineering)
  • Expertise in geological characterisation techniques (core logging and/or mapping, geochemistry, mineralogy)
  • Experience with established and emerging characterisation technologies (e.g., core scanning platforms/technologies, automated mineralogy)
  • An understanding of metallurgical and geoenvironmental test work approaches and new or emerging technologies/techniques in this area
  • Data science experience (including programming/coding) is desirable
  • Industry experience or placements in the minerals sector is desirable
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce high-quality reports, grant applications, and journal publications
  • A growing profile of research in the discipline area including a developing reputation and track record of publications in reputed refereed journals and presentation at conferences
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, leading specific research projects
  • A growing record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion is desirable
  • Experience in meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with active contributions to external activities
