Get to Know Us

Svitzer has been in the business of safe marine operations since 1833. Today, our crews across Australia and Papua New Guinea work on the front lines of towage - handling every job with precision, teamwork, and care. If you're looking for hands-on work with a close-knit crew and a company that cares for its people - we're ready when you are.

Thanks to our continued success in Darwin, we're looking to welcome additional Tug Masters to our team on an 80% part-time, unrostered basis. If you're passionate about working safely as part of a close-knit marine crew, this could be the ideal opportunity. The role requires a minimum of 145 working days per year (equivalent to 80% of full-time) and may involve short-notice call-ins, so preference is given to those living locally or willing to relocate at their own expense.

You'll receive a fortnightly salary based on an 80% pro-rata structure, with the full-time equivalent set at $212,525 per annum. Additional rates apply for working over 145 days. Two leave options are available: five days off per month with one 30-day block annually, or seven days off monthly without block leave.

Why You'll Want to Join Us

Situated at the crossroads of Asia-Pacific trade routes, Darwin offers a unique opportunity to work in a high-stakes, fast-paced maritime environment. As a key location for harbour towage, terminal operations and naval support, Darwin provides a dynamic setting where you'll be part of important and meaningful work every day.

How You'll Make a Difference

As a Tug Master, you'll take the lead onboard - guiding your crew and delivering safe, reliable towage every day. Reporting to the Port Manager, your responsibilities will include:

  • Taking command of the tug and leading a capable, safety-focused crew
  • Ensuring the vessel is operationally ready - from stores and crew attendance to daily checks
  • Maintaining compliance with safety procedures and maritime regulations
  • Supporting crew performance and development, and escalating issues when needed
  • Assisting with vessel maintenance and keeping operational records accurate and up to date
  • Leading safety onboard through inductions, drills, and ongoing training
  • Sharing your knowledge and helping build capability across the team

What You'll Bring

To thrive in this role, you'll bring:

  • A minimum Master
  • A Long-Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP) or equivalent
  • A valid AMSA Medical that matches your Certificate of Competency
  • Current Provide First Aid and Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificates
  • Experience operating ASD tugs - this will help you step in with confidence
  • A supportive leadership stye that builds trust and brings the crew together
  • A strong focus on safety and following procedures to get the job done right
  • The ability to stay calm, think clearly, and adapt when conditions change
  • A willingness to embrace technology and support sustainable ways of working
  • The right to live and work in Australia
