The Role
The acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines is an historic and transformative endeavour for Australia. The whole-of-nation effort to safely and securely deliver the cutting edge nuclear-powered submarine program (NPS Program) will transform Australia’s economic and national security landscape for decades to come.
The Threats and Workforce Protection (TWP) Branch in Stewardship and Security Division of the Australian Submarine Agency (ASA) supports the delivery of a safe and secure nuclear-powered submarine capability by understanding and communicating threats to the NPS Program, uplifting security culture and awareness across ASA and NPS enterprise workforces and mitigating personnel security risks through effective early detection, intervention and organisational suitability assessment processes.
TWP Branch are seeking highly motivated individuals who seek to work collaboratively to solve complex security problems to fill a number of APS 6 Personnel Security roles.
In these roles your strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, organisational skills and attention to detail will be essential in supporting the effective and efficient delivery of the Branch’s suitability processes. You will be adept at managing competing and time critical priorities. You will work independently in a small team under broad direction with accountability for your work outcomes.
In an APS 6 Personnel Security role you will be required to interpret and apply legislation, policies, procedures, standards, corporate objectives, and instructions. You will support relationships across the NPS Enterprise and work productively and collegiately in a multidisciplinary environment. You will provide detailed and sound guidance to various stakeholders in relation to complex security matters in accordance with the Commonwealth Protective Security Policy Framework, the Defence Security Principles Framework and ASA security policies. You will be required to identify, anticipate and respond to stakeholders’ needs and expectations to achieve Branch and ASA outcomes; and will display maturity, resilience and strong commitment to Australia’s national interests.
Senior Suitability Strategy Officer
As an APS 6 Senior Suitability Strategy Officer, you will be responsible for:
- Coordinating case workflows and undertaking quality assurance checks.
- Maintaining performance reporting of the ASA’s organisational suitability assessment processes, and coordinating input into corporate reporting and briefing activities.
- Supporting secretariat functions for senior governance boards.
- Undertaking procurement and contract management activities to support the ongoing management of a contracted workforce.
- Contributing to strategic planning and the development, implementation, and review of policies, procedures and systems to support the delivery of the ASA’s suitability processes.
Senior Suitability Analyst
As an APS 6 Senior Suitability Analyst, you will be responsible for:
- Gathering and analysing information from various sources to prepare detailed reports.
- Synthesising information to monitor for trends and identify personnel security risk.
- Conducting complex personnel security interviews.
- Making assessments utilising your expertise of personnel security risk factors to support the ASA’s suitability processes.
- Building team capability through coaching, providing feedback and developing the quality of work undertaken by others within the work unit.
- Contributing to strategic planning and capability development to support the delivery of the ASA’s suitability processes.

Specific criteria for Senior Suitability Strategy Officer:
- Exceptional organisational, coordination, record keeping and liaison skills and the ability to prioritise effectively.
Specific criteria for Senior Suitability Analyst:
- High level research, analytical and writing skills, and experience in preparing complex written reports and advice.
- Experience in identifying and developing solutions for personnel security risk matters in a personnel security or integrity type role with knowledge of the PSPF and TS-PA Standard, or ability to acquire knowledge quickly.
