The Role
The acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines is an historic and transformative endeavour for Australia. The whole-of-nation effort to safely and securely deliver the cutting edge nuclear-powered submarine program will transform Australia’s economic and national security landscape for decades to come.
The Threats and Workforce protection (TWP) Branch in Stewardship and Security Division of the Australian Submarine Agency is seeking highly motivated individuals who seek to work collaboratively to solve complex security matters, achieve good security outcomes and enhance the Nuclear Powered Submarine (NPS) Enterprise’s security posture to fill a number of APS 6 Security roles across the Branch.
In these roles your strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, organisational skills and attention to detail will be essential in supporting the effective and efficient delivery of the Branch’s suitability processes. You will be adept at managing competing and time critical priorities. You will work independently in a small team under broad direction with accountability for your work outcomes.You may act as team mentor and manager setting work priorities and managing workflows.
In a TWP Branch APS 6 security role you will be required to interpret and apply legislation, policies, procedures, standards, corporate objectives, and instructions. You will support relationships across the NPS Enterprise and work productively and collegiately in a multidisciplinary environment. You will provide detailed and sound guidance to various stakeholders in relation to complex security matters in accordance with the Commonwealth Protective Security Policy Framework, the Defence Security Principles Framework and ASA security policies. You will be required to identify, anticipate and respond to stakeholders’ needs and expectations to achieve Branch and ASA outcomes; and will display maturity, resilience and strong commitment to Australia’s national interests.
Security Investigator
As an APS6 Security Investigator, you will be responsible for:
- Review, assess and respond to security incident reporting, contact reports, and ad hoc security referrals.
- Oversee and perform security incident response and fact-finding activities in accordance with legislation, policies and procedures.
- Collect and assess information and data to make informed decisions, and select appropriate investigation methodologies.
- Prepare and assist in the preparation of fact-finding summaries and formal referrals, and provide advice to stakeholders and partner agencies.
- Prepare briefings, reports, correspondence and documentation relating to security incidents, inquiries and outcomes.
- Facilitate and support partner agency inquires and requirements.
- Utilise and maintain information management systems to support, manage and document fact-finding activities.
Security Outreach Officer
As an APS6 Security Outreach Officer, you will be responsible for:
- Establishing and building productive working relationships with government and non-government stakeholders across the NPS enterprise for the purposes of maintaining and enhancing the Enterprise’s security literacy, culture and posture.
- Utilising your strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, experience, and attention to support to conduct in-person protective security briefings and training with internal and external NPS Enterprise stakeholders.
- Interpreting and confidently briefing stakeholders about NPS Program related legislation, policies, procedures, objectives and threat reporting as it relates to security
- Facilitate and support referrals and engagement about topics pertaining to the priorities, objectives and functions of other parts of the Branch, Division or Group to achieve cohesive security outcomes for the NPS Program.
Senior Security Officer
As an APS6 Senior Security officer, you will be responsible for fulfilling the Security Officer function within the agency including:
- Supporting the agency's on-boarding process for employees and contractors with respect of security clearance sponsorship administration and liaison with the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA).
- Monitoring and managing protective security matters impacting the ASA including providing specialist, technical protective security advice and services.
- Utilising your strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, experience, and attention to detail to provide comprehensive security advice and responses.
- Interpreting and applying legislation, policies, procedures, corporate objectives, and instructions to complex security matters and incidents.
- Developing, implementing and managing protective security policies, procedures and risk assessments.

The Threats and Workforce Protection (TWP) Branch in Stewardship and Security Division of the Australian Submarine Agency supports the delivery of a safe and secure nuclear-powered submarine capability by:
- Understanding and communicating threats to the NPS Program
- Uplifting security culture and awareness across Australian Submarine Agency and NPS Enterprise workforces
- Mitigating personnel security risks through effective early detection (insider threat), security incident management and response, and organisational suitability assessment processes.
- Providing contemporary security advice around national security clearance processes
