Veritas House is a vibrant, not-for-profit, community-based organisation with a specific focus on supporting vulnerable children, young people and their families. We are looking for a passionate Youth Support Worker to join our Permenancy Support Team in Bathurst, NSW.

About the role

The Youth Support Worker position plays a key role in supporting our caseworkers, children and young people in our Permanency Support Program. This role will have a mix of supporting and mentoring young people living independently, as well as children and young people in foster care placements - with a focus on supporting in domains such as living skills, family visits and mentoring.

Specific Responsibilities of this role include

Mentoring children and young people, either inside or outside of their home

Work with young people living independently to learn how to maintain a tenancy, prepare for property inspections and increase their money management and budgeting skills.

Assist children and young people increase their independent living and life skills such as navigating government services e.g. Centrelink, obtaining education or employment opportunity, building capacity in the community and wider networks.

Facilitate enjoyable, positive and meaningful supervised contact between a child/young person and their parents/family, enabling them to interact in a safe, supportive and non-judgmental environment

Pick up and transport child/young person when required

Model, coach and support parents and children to play, communicate and interact in mutually enjoyable ways

Selection Criteria

Selection Criteria

1. Certificate IV or Diploma or higher qualification in Youth Work, Community Services, Criminal Justice or similar along with experience working with youth and families.

2. Knowledge and understanding of the legislation, rights and resources available to children and young people who have been placed in Out of Home Care.

3. Demonstrated ability to engage and work with children, young people, their families and carers

4. Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed care and the challenges faced by children and young people who have experienced significant trauma

5. High level of written, verbal and computer-based communication skills, including the use of databases and Microsoft Office programs

6. A current unrestricted driver’s licence, Working with Children Check and First Aid Certificate are pre-requisites for this role.

All employment at Veritas House is subject to a clear Working with Children Check and a satisfactory National Police Check.
