About the NSW Ombudsman

Government agencies touch and impact the lives of the people of NSW every day, and we are there to make sure those interactions are fair. Government is complex and people need to have confidence that someone is holding government agencies to account if their actions are unreasonable, wrong or unlawful.

We are that someone. We are the organisation that shines a light on serious wrong conduct in the delivery of government services. Our ultimate goal is that everyone receives the right services and fair treatment from the agencies we oversight.

Our scope is broad. We cover services for vulnerable families, including the delivery of community services funded by government; local councils; correctional and youth justice centres; education; environment protection and public transport – to name a few!

We work to help resolve problems at an individual level, as well as looking at the bigger picture to promote system improvements in public administration and in the delivery of community services. We are confident in the knowledge that our work will give voice to the individual and bring fairness and balance to how the government delivers to the public it serves.

We are committed to providing a range of career development opportunities. We aim to guide and help our people with the skills they need to lead our organisation and give the most impact to what they do.

The Role

In this role you will support the Investigations and Major Projects Branch teams by leading coordination and improvement work, as well as projects that support the delivery of their work. You will have the opportunity to lead and manage a variety of activities such as coordinating resources, reporting, technical support and managing stakeholder engagement, with the opportunity to participate in major investigations and projects.

Key Accountabilities

Leading and managing specific projects relating to business improvement initiatives and branch capability optimisation in the Branch, including developing and monitoring project plans, delivering agreed project deliverables on time and to the standard required.

Identifying emerging service delivery challenges and potential process or system-level solutions to improve business processes and stakeholder satisfaction and collaborate with other relevant managers to implement improvements.

Acting as a key liaison point with any external providers and provide quality assurance of work undertaken by external providers or other staff contributing to business improvement projects.

Coordinating and contributing to: internal and external reporting on project milestones and progress; internal and external audit processes; processes for monitoring of recommendations made to agencies.

About you

To be successful in this role you will have demonstrated experience in project management, preferably with a business improvement focus. You have excellent communication, critical thinking and analytical skills. You will be a self starter with the ability to handle competing and complex priorities effectively.

About NSW Ombudsman

Sydney, NSW, Australia

The NSW Ombudsman is an independent and impartial watchdog. Our job is to make sure that agencies we watch over fulfill their functions properly and improve their delivery of services to the public.

We watch over most public sector and many private sector agencies and their staff. Our role is to make sure these agencies and their staff do their jobs properly, meeting their responsibilities to the community.

We help agencies within our jurisdiction to address problems with their performance. These problems may be uncovered by complaints from the public or by people who work for those agencies. Problems may also come to our attention through our work in scrutinising agency systems, overseeing investigations or reviewing the delivery of services.

Our work is guided by a range of legislation, including the Ombudsman Act 1974.
