About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Embedded Software Developer to drive the delivery of embedded software projects while primarily being a programmer, you will also support and coordinate a small team of part-time developers and other multi-disciplinary engineers. You will combine hands-on development with team guidance, ensuring work meets technical standards and project deliverables.

You will apply your technical expertise in Rust, C, and/or C++ within embedded environments, while fostering a collaborative and high-performing team culture.

You will also get great exposure to the electronics design and manufacturing processes that all happen within the wider team. This isn't a traditional office environment. If you are a tinkerer and into electronics, 3d printing and broader engineering, you will be a perfect fit.

What are we Looking For?

Mandatory Technical Requirements:

Australian Citizenship (due to Defence project requirements)

Proficiency in Rust, C, and/or C++ programming languages, particularly for embedded systems

Experience developing software for resource-constrained and real-time embedded systems

Familiarity or experience with embedded technologies and frameworks

Ability to integrate software solutions with embedded hardware platforms

Experience writing, testing, and deploying software on Linux-based platforms, with understanding of system internals and toolchains

Experience using debugging tools, protocol analysers, and embedded build systems

Capability to write clean, maintainable, and efficient code

Experience with managing production deployments (e.g. CI/CD, OTA updates, Blue/Green deployment)

Minimum 3 years professional software development experience

Demonstrated practical capability, supported by a GitHub or similar portfolio

Ability to conduct code reviews and provide constructive feedback

Desired Technical Experience:

Qualification in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related field

Experience supervising or coordinating small technical teams would be advantageous, but not mandatory

Exposure to automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and code quality tools

Full stack development exposure

Experience within Defence, aerospace, or highly regulated industries would also be advantageous

Key Responsibilities

Develop, test, and maintain high-quality software solutions for embedded systems

Participate in design discussions and define technical approaches

Optimise software for performance, scalability, and maintainability

Conduct code reviews and promote best practices

Support and coordinate part-time developers to ensure effective task progress

Mentor junior developers to support their growth

Collaborate with the Product Owner to define, estimate, and plan development tasks

Liaise with stakeholders to ensure clear understanding of requirements

Ensure software meets internal and client standards

Workplace Environment:

Office-based in Canberra

Potential travel to Secure Bits offices in Sydney and Melbourne or potentially to client sites further afield

Flexible working arrangements available (within reason), but this is primarily an in office role - when you get to understand what we do, you will know why
