Position purpose
Greater Sydney Landcare (GSL), in partnership with Landcare NSW, is planting 200,000 native trees across Greater Sydney from 2023 – 2025, as part of the Greening our City initiative.
GSL runs a Corporate Program that facilitates corporate conservation events including planting trees, bush regeneration, litter clean up and more, across Greater Sydney.
GSL provides natural resource management services to clients.
This role is responsible for assisting in all the projects listed above when required.
Casual Fieldwork Officer with Greater Sydney Landcare across multiple conservation/volunteer projects. Approx. 1 day a week with potential for more.
Occasional Weekend work.
Main tasks
The role includes the following:
- Preparing sites for planting, including brush cutting, herbicide treatment of exotic species, drilling holes (using augers), and spreading mulch.
- Working safely alongside or supervising contractors on site.
- Planting native trees and shrubs to required standards.
- Assisting and supervising volunteers at community/corporate events, conducting demonstrations and ensuring that quality standards are met.
- Conducting maintenance of planted sites as required, including ongoing watering, brush cutting, and herbicide treatment, maximizing plant survival rates on site.
- Conducting monitoring visits, including assessing, and recording plant survival rates, establishing photo monitoring points, and contributing to site reports as required.
- Contributing to ongoing reporting as required by project management.
- represent GSL interests, values, and goals.
- understand, follow, and contribute to GSL safe work procedures.
- Ensure contractors and volunteers adhere to GSL safe work procedures.
- understand and follow the Canopies and GSL processes, procedures, and systems.

Required qualities

Person Specifications Qualifications/Accreditations
Required:
- White Card
- First Aid/CPR (provided)
- Driver's License
- AQF3 (Chemical accreditation)
- Working with Children Check
Preferred:
- Cert III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management or equivalent experience
Experience
- Previous experience working as a Bush Regenerator
- Previous experience working in Landscaping
- Previous experience working with volunteers e.g., bushcare volunteers
Knowledge
- Strong native and weed identification skills
- Small engines operation e.g., Brush cutters, Water pumps, Augers and chainsaws
Other
- Current driver’s license
- Have a high level of physical fitness
- Work effectively in a team environment
- Be punctual and reliable
- Be dedicated to improving their skills and experience in bush regeneration
- Be passionate about environmental change
- Willingness to travel across Greater Sydney
