Life at Mission Australia
When you join the team at Mission Australia, you become part of a community who are determined to end homelessness and ensure people in need can thrive. United by our Christian purpose and values, we stand together with anyone who needs us, for as long as they need us. Find out more about us and our purpose.
Your Opportunity
This role is designed for someone with lived experience. Maybe you've walked your own path through alcohol and other drug use, mental health challenges, or both-and come out the other side with insight, empathy, and a desire to support others.
As an Intake Support Peer Worker in our Coexisting Illness team, you'll use that experience to support people aged 26+ as they take their own first steps into recovery. You'll help make our services feel safer, more relatable, and more human.
You don't need formal qualifications to start-we'll support you to complete a fully funded Certificate IV in Peer Work, opening up an incredibly meaningful career path.
What You'll Do
- Be a compassionate, authentic presence for people entering the service
- Help with intake, screening, and group activities-making the process feel less clinical and more human
- Offer brief interventions and harm-reduction support
- Draw on your lived experience to foster trust and hope
- Build real, respectful relationships with clients and team members
- Advocate with and for clients-ensuring their voice shapes their care
- Take part in regular supervision and reflective practice
- Contribute ideas to improve our programs from the peer perspective
What You'll Bring
- Your own lived experience of AOD and/or mental health recovery
- A strong belief in people's ability to change, grow, and recover
- Openness to learning-especially if you're just beginning your peer work journey
- A willingness to complete a Certificate IV in Peer Work (we'll fund it!)
- An understanding of recovery and peer work principles and values
- A commitment to safe boundaries, self-care, and insight into your own story
- The ability to build trust through compassion, honesty, and humility
- A current driver's licence
Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.
Your benefits
- Rewarding work - every day you know you're making a real difference
- Not-for-profit salary packaging, reducing your tax (details via AccessPay)
- Opportunity to purchase additional annual leave
- Free external, confidential counselling and access to chaplaincy support
- Volunteering opportunities
- Extra leave including: Mission Australia Thank You Day & Work Anniversary Day off
