Our Vegetation, Monitoring and Reporting team is seeking to appoint a Senior Scientist Remote Sensing to join our team dedicated to detecting, monitoring and reporting on native vegetation change using satellite imagery and remote sensing methods.

This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic remote sensing scientist to apply their technical skills to deliver on-ground environmental outcomes for the people of NSW. The Vegetation Monitoring and Reporting team innovates and responds to dynamic conservation goals using the latest technologies. The successful candidate will lead a small team responsible for remote sensing and spatial data processing and data management, analysis and dashboard construction for the NSW vegetation clearing report. About You

Applying your demonstrated skills in remote sensing methods, spatial data analysis, data management, and image interpretation, you will provide technical direction and support in the delivery of native vegetation change programs. You will collaborate with other experts on the development and maintenance of the Python code and Postgres databases which drive high-performance computing to deliver these programs. You will be comfortable working in both UNIX and windows environments and have an interest in presenting data in dashboard form.

You will thrive as part of a geographically dispersed team that supports flexible working and promotes collaboration and knowledge sharing. Your role will include leading a small team as well as guiding and training your colleagues to build their skills in software applications and technical understanding of remote sensing. Your communication skills will be applied in presenting geographic, spatial and technical information to diverse audiences.

Key knowledge and experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in remote sensing, image interpretation, scripting in ‘python’ or similar high-level language, database and spatial data management preferably using Postgres or similar in a UNIX based high performance computing (HPC) environment.
  • Experience building and maintaining PowerBI, or similar, dashboards is preferred.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree in relevant field or equivalent demonstrated relevant experience in application of Remote Sensing to environmental monitoring.
