PBF Australia (Paraplegic Benefit Fund) is a national not-for-profit organisation dedicated to reducing the incidence and impact of spinal cord injury (SCI). We’re currently seeking a compassionate and motivated Peer Support Mentor with lived experience of SCI to join our Peer Support team based at Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth, WA.
This is a casual and flexible opportunity to share hope, strength, and guidance with individuals navigating their early stages of recovery after spinal cord injury.
About the Role
As a Peer Support Mentor, you will provide non-clinical, emotional, and practical support to patients currently undergoing rehabilitation. Drawing on your personal journey, you’ll help others adjust, connect with resources, and feel less alone during a challenging time.
You will also support families, collaborate with hospital staff, and contribute to awareness and education through PBF’s community initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Offer empathetic, one-on-one peer support to patients with SCI and their families
Share appropriate lived experiences to promote hope and resilience
Deliver and support presentations, peer-led discussions, and educational sessions
Help connect patients with community services, networks, and resources
Collaborate with PBF's Peer Support and Presenter Wellness Coordinator
Represent PBF at community and hospital events, building key relationships
Maintain session records and provide feedback to support program quality
What You’ll Bring
Essential:
Personal lived experience of spinal cord injury and strong personal adjustment
Empathy, resilience, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to inspire and connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds
Understanding of the emotional, physical, and social impacts of SCI
Confidence to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Commitment to professional boundaries, confidentiality, and wellbeing
Desirable:
Previous experience in peer support, mentoring, education, or disability advocacy
Knowledge of SCI rehabilitation environments and recovery pathways
Comfort with public speaking or group presentations (training provided)

Additional Requirements
Current (or willingness to obtain): National Police Clearance and Working with Children Check
Based at Fiona Stanley Hospital; some occasional travel may be required
Participation in PBF's induction, training, and mentoring program
