About The Role
Working as part of our client’s project delivery team you will be reporting to the National Fleet and Workshop Manager, this role involves a broad range of responsibilities related to the planning, maintenance, and execution of heavy diesel mechanical works Heavy Diesel Mechanic will oversee and perform diagnostics, repairs, and servicing of heavy plant and equipment, ensuring optimal performance and minimal downtime throughout project delivery. Our client is looking for an experienced Heavy diesel mechanic that’s is wanting to progess into a Leading Hand position and you will be responsible for the following duties:
Duties include:
· Leading and mentoring a team of mechanics and trade assistants - Oversee the daily operations of the workshop team, providing clear direction, technical support, and ongoing mentorship to ensure high performance, skills development, and adherence to safety and quality standards.
· Assigning and prioritising daily maintenance, diagnostics, and repair tasks - Plan, schedule, and delegate work orders across the team based on equipment needs, job urgency, and resource availability, ensuring minimal downtime and timely completion of all mechanical tasks.
· Ensuring all fleet vehicles meet safety and compliance standards - Monitor and enforce strict compliance with all relevant mechanical safety standards, maintenance schedules, and inspection protocols to guarantee the operational readiness and legal compliance of all heavy vehicles and plant equipment.
· Assisting with mechanical and electrical fault finding and repair - Carry out advanced diagnostics and troubleshooting of complex mechanical and electrical faults, working alongside the team to resolve issues quickly and efficiently, reducing equipment failure and downtime.
· Supporting documentation, inventory, and parts tracking - Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs, and defect reports while managing stock levels of parts and consumables to ensure availability and accountability of critical workshop materials.
· Responding to workshop issues and assisting hands-on when needed - Actively step in to resolve unforeseen workshop challenges, assist with technical repairs during peak demand, and ensure smooth day-to-day operations through a hands-on leadership approach.
· Stepping in to support the Workshop Manager during leave - Take on additional responsibilities including team supervision, reporting, planning, and coordination of workshop activities during the Workshop Manager’s absence, ensuring continuity of operations and standards.
What You Will Need
To be successful in this role you will need to have the below:
· Trade-qualified Heavy Diesel Mechanic
· Experience working with Scania and Volvo vehicles (advantageous)
· HR Licence (preferred)
· Leadership experience or the confidence to step into a leadership role
· Strong communication, organisational, and team coordination skills
· Flexibility to work on a rotating weekend roster
· Focus on safety, quality, and compliance
