About The Opportunity
The Healthy Places team in SWSLHD Population Health takes a unique approach to optimising the health of the South Western Sydney population, working to embed health as a priority in public decision-making, especially in local government and agencies responsible for planning, placemaking and development.

The Manager Healthy Places leads healthy planning and placemaking initiatives through:

  • Building and maintaining relationships with built environment practitioners, decision-makers and researchers in local government, the not-for-profit sector, the private sector and academia.
  • Coordinating SWSLHD responses to strategic planning documents, planning instruments, development proposals, environmental impact statements as required.
  • Supporting business processes in Population Health with a specific focus in healthy places and relationships with local government.

Role entails:

  • Leading healthy planning and placemaking initiatives.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with built environment practitioners, decision-makers and researchers in local government, the not-for-profit sector, the private sector and academia.
  • Coordinate SWSLHD responses to strategic planning documents, planning instruments, development proposals, environmental impact statements as required.
  • Supporting business processes in Population Health with a specific focus in healthy places and relationships with local government.

The role reports to the Director Collaboration and supervises two Healthy Places Senior Project Officers as well as working closely with other members of the Collaboration Unit.

The Healthy Places team looks after formal partnerships with several local councils, and the role is instrumental in building and maintaining these relationships – this includes partnership officers employed by councils and co-funded by SWSLHD Population Health.

The role supports a number of other internal and external relationships, including non-partnership councils, other government agencies, health alliances, researchers, NGOs, and the development sector.

What You'll Be Doing
The Health Places Manager will work within the Population Health Collaboration Unit providing leadership and planning expertise to co-design programs to create places that keep people healthy in South Western Sydney. The Healthy Places Manager is responsible for planning, implementation, evaluation and local coordination of healthy places initiatives that build capability in neighbourhood and built systems.

The Healthy Places Manager will contribute to implementation of the relevant SWSLHD strategic directions including the Healthy Environments Strategy for SWSLHD 2022 – 2027 focused on the creation of healthier built and natural environments across SWSLHD.

This position could suit a person from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds including health promotion, social science, urban planning, environmental health, local government or similar.

Demonstrated understanding of the interconnected relationship between built and natural environments and public health outcomes.

Experience in project management including the ability to plan, design, implement, monitor and evaluate population focused programs to improve health through neighbourhood and built systems.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a range of stakeholders through advocacy, influence and negotiation, (including across organisations, with other levels of government, Councils, the community and key stakeholders) to achieve successful program implementation and sustainability.

Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.

  1. Relevant tertiary qualifications in urban planning/ landscape architecture/architecture, public health, social science , or related disciplines relevant to health and/or the built environment and/or experience in planning built environments for local or state government.
