AIDR is the National Institute for disaster risk reduction and resilience and collaborates across sectors to strengthen the resilience of Australian communities to disasters. AIDR contributes to Outcome 2 of the Second National Action Plan for Disaster Risk Reduction; An effective and connected disaster risk reduction knowledge system that provides a solid foundation for action.
AIDR is funded by the National Emergency Management Agency and managed by the Australasian Fire and Emergency Services Authorities Council (AFAC). AFAC is Australia and New Zealand’s National Council for fire and emergency Services and represents 36-member organisations who are totalling over 288,000 firefighters and emergency services workers.
About the Position: Manager Knowledge Management
The Manager, Knowledge Management plays a critical leadership role within the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience (AIDR), overseeing the development, management, and continuous improvement of digital knowledge platforms that support disaster risk reduction and resilience efforts across Australia.
This position leads the delivery and strategic direction of the Australian Disaster Resilience Knowledge Hub, Disaster Mapper, National Recovery Monitoring Database, and the Australian Emergency Management Library. These platforms are essential tools in helping practitioners, communities, and decision-makers access, translate and apply disaster resilience knowledge.
This is a hands-on role that requires someone who is strategic, organised and adaptable—equally confident engaging with stakeholders, managing content, and delivering complex digital projects in a small and high-performing team. In addition to these responsibilities, the position also includes:
Knowledge Management & Content Delivery
Coordinate the production and publication of new resources and collections on emerging disaster resilience themes.
Translate research and data into engaging and useful knowledge products for a diverse national audience.
Project Management
Lead planning, execution, and monitoring of knowledge management initiatives aligned with AIDR’s strategic work plan.
Oversee contractor deliverables and budgets for digital platform and content development projects.
Monitor timelines, milestones and outcomes across multiple concurrent projects.
Deliver reports in line with AIDR’s reporting schedule and evaluation requirements.
Organise and facilitate online and in-person forums, workshops and knowledge-sharing events.
Stakeholder Engagement
Build and maintain productive relationships with key external stakeholders, including National Emergency Management Agency, Natural Hazards Research Australia, government agencies, and community organisations.
Collaborate with vendors, IT teams and content partners to ensure delivery of high-impact knowledge platforms.
Represent AIDR at public events and forums, including delivering presentations and engaging with media where required.
Team Contribution
Support and contribute to a collaborative and high-trust team environment within AIDR.
Assist with cross-functional projects and shared responsibilities as part of a small, agile organisation.
Uphold AIDR’s professional image and values in all internal and external interactions.
About You
You are a detail-oriented, digitally fluent leader with a passion for knowledge sharing and community impact. You bring strong project and stakeholder management experience—ideally in the disaster resilience, emergency management, or public information fields—and are confident managing complex digital content ecosystems.
You’re highly organised, comfortable managing competing priorities, and motivated to deliver accessible, relevant knowledge products that make a real difference. This role will also be an ideal opportunity for a Senior Project Officer who is looking for a step up in their career.
Key Skills and Experience
Essential
Tertiary qualifications in geography, environmental science, social sciences, librarianship, communications, health, or emergency management (or equivalent experience).
Strong understanding of disaster risk reduction and/or emergency management in the Australian context.
Demonstrated experience in project management and digital content delivery.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build trust and manage expectations with diverse stakeholders.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with digital collaboration and content tools.
Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work effectively with minimal supervision in a small team environment.
High level of integrity, adaptability and attention to detail.
Desirable
Experience in website content management
Experience in knowledge or data management systems and principles.
