Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospital is the principle tertiary hospital within the region and provides a broad range of referral services in all specialist areas to Darwin, the Top End of the NT, Western Australia and South-East Asia.
Currently, the Royal Darwin Hospital is inviting Unaccredited General Surgery Registrars to apply for 12-month training programs starting in February 2026.
Under the direction of Dr. Suraj Rathnayake, a renowned Surgical Specialist and Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, you will further develop your surgical skills by providing high-quality surgical services to patients referred by the Hospital’s Emergency Department and undertake consults for inpatients.
Your key duties will involve the admission, management and discharge of patients from the service under the supervision of surgical consultants/fellows and participating in the operating theatre. You will also be required to participate in the Department’s 24-hr roster to ensure the proper functioning of the service and provide outreach services to Katherine and Gove hospitals. In addition, you will have the opportunity to conduct research, peer review practices, professional development, and provide supervision to junior medical and clinical staff.
To be successful you are required to be eligible for appropriate registration with the Medical Board of Australia, have relevant training and experience applicable to General Surgery, and can demonstrate surgical competency, research capability and a commitment to delivering high-quality care to patients.
