This role sits at the heart of our legal and regulatory work, helping ensure engineers meet high professional standards and that the public is kept safe. You'll report to the Principal Legal Officer and be involved in some of the most important and interesting legal work in the public sector.
Key Responsibilities
Assess and investigate complaints about professional misconduct and offences under the PE Act
Provide high-quality legal advice on investigations and regulatory enforcement matters
Represent the Board in complex cases before the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal and Magistrates Courts
Draft legal advice, briefing notes, correspondence, and legal documents for internal and external stakeholders
Supervise and mentor junior legal team members to support their development and ensure quality outcomes
Maintain detailed case management records and report on risks, progress, and outcomes
Respond to applications under the Right to Information Act 2009 and Information Privacy Act 2009
Develop relationships with key stakeholders, including other government departments, legal and engineering professionals
Assist with policy and program development to promote compliance and better understanding of the PE Act
Stay up to date with relevant legal developments and contribute to continuous improvement in our legal practice
Support compliance operations and audits related to registration and assessment schemes as required
Prepare reports and briefings for senior leadership, the Board, and government stakeholders
What We're Looking For
Minimum 5+ years post-admission legal experience
Current Queensland Practising Certificate (or ability to obtain one)
Experience with professional misconduct, non-compliance or regulatory matters (such as professional negligence, construction, or building disputes)
Strong ability to interpret legislation and apply it in a regulatory context
Excellent time management skills, with the ability to prioritise and work independently
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate, support colleagues, and resolve problems.
