Swimming Coach – Development Squad & Junior School Team
Location: Inner South-East Melbourne
Salary: Level 2–3, commensurate with experience
The Melbourne Sports Institute is seeking a passionate and skilled Swimming Coach to join the thriving Aquatics program at a grammar school-based swimming club in Melbourne’s inner south-east. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the Development Squad and the Junior School Swimming Team, fostering a love of swimming, promoting water safety, and guiding young athletes into competitive swimming.
About the Role
As the Development Squad Coach, you will be responsible for coaching swimmers across various year levels (year 4-8), ranging from those swimming for fun and fitness to those training for competition. This squad trains all year round with the option of taking part in optional holiday training sessions. You will also oversee the Junior School Squad (Years 4–6), which trains year-round during school terms. In Term 4, Year 3 students are invited to join this squad.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and coach the Development Squad (years 4-8), catering to both recreational and competitive swimmers.
Design and deliver engaging, age-appropriate training programs.
Coach the SSV Junior School Squad (Years 4–6), with Term 4 intake from Year 3.
Collaborate closely with the Head of Aquatics, school staff, and fellow coaches to ensure a cohesive and supportive training environment.
Scheduled Hours
Development Squad Training:
Monday/Wednesday/Friday: 6:30–8:30am (pool session: 6:45–8:15am)
Tuesday/Thursday: 6:15–7:45pm (pool session: 6:30–7:30pm)
SSV Squad Training:
Thursday: 7:00–8:30am (pool session: 7:15–8:15am)
Additional Hours:
Occasional weekends for swim meets
All shifts are paid a minimum of 2 hours, regardless of session duration
Selection Criteria
Prior experience coaching junior swimmers (preferred)
Swim Australia Competitive Strokes qualification or Austswim equivalent (or willingness to obtain)
Strong organisational skills, initiative, and independence
Excellent communication skills for engaging with students and staff
Sound knowledge of swimming techniques across all strokes and athlete development
Required Qualifications
Valid Working With Children Check (WWCC)
Competitive Strokes Qualification (or willingness to work towards certification)
First Aid
CPR
Lifeguard (desirable)
