ABOUT THE ROLE
To support our national growth, Smedley's Engineers is seeking a Melbourne-based Heavy Vehicle Engineer, reporting to the Engineering Manager - Certification and Compliance.
This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys combining technical work in Vehicle Standards, Compliance, and Certification with field-based activities and direct customer engagement.

ABOUT YOU
You’re a solutions-focused and detail-oriented engineer with a strong foundation in mechanical or heavy vehicle engineering. You bring a minimum of five years’ experience in the Australian heavy vehicle industry, with a sound understanding of ADRs and compliance frameworks. Ideally, you’re already a VASS Signatory - or have the capability and drive to become one. You’re confident preparing technical reports, conducting inspections, and navigating regulatory requirements.
You enjoy solving complex problems, communicating clearly with stakeholders, and making a tangible impact on vehicle safety, performance, and compliance. Above all, you're passionate about contributing to a high-performing team and continuously improving your craft in a technically challenging and rewarding environment.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO SUCCEED
Essential Criteria
VASS Signatory status is highly preferred; at minimum, you must be eligible and capable of obtaining VASS accreditation.
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the Australian heavy vehicle industry.
Strong understanding of Australian Design Rules (ADRs) and relevant Australian and international standards. Demonstrated ability to prepare high-quality engineering documentation, compliance reports, and technical assessments.
Proven capability in root cause analysis, technical troubleshooting, and providing evidence-based solutions.
Experience conducting engineering inspections, vehicle or asset testing, and failure investigations.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with stakeholders and regulatory bodies.
Ability to manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders and advocate for engineering and compliance outcomes.
Professional presentation with a collaborative, solution-focused approach.
A genuine passion for engineering and a strong desire to keep learning and growing in your field.
Desirable (Non-Essential) Criteria
Familiarity with NHVR Performance-Based Standards (PBS).
Proficiency with engineering design and simulation tools such as CAD, ANSYS, or similar.

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide engineering advice and guidance on Australian Design Rules (ADRs), Australian Standards and other relevant technical requirements relating to heavy vehicle and other infrastructure assets including large scale machinery and equipment.
Prepare and review engineering compliance documentation for VASS and AVE certifications, ensuring alignment with statutory requirements and best practice standards.
Conduct inspections and technical reviews of heavy vehicles and related assets to assess compliance with prescribed standards, providing recommendations to support certification and regulatory outcomes.
Provide engineering input into the implementation and evaluation of government standards, policies and strategic initiatives relating to heavy vehicle and other infrastructure assets including large scale machinery and equipment.
Contribute to technical aspects of vehicle regulation by identifying opportunities to improve the productivity and safety of the heavy vehicle industry and providing sound engineering and policy advice.
Utilising engineering analytical and problem-solving skills to address technical issues related to asset performance and improvement.
Perform forensic engineering investigations and root cause analyses to identify asset or component failures and develop evidence-based solutions.
Develop systems and work methods to support engineering activities and increase efficiency.
Preparation of Engineering Compliance documentation
Support efforts to enhance the quality, efficiency, and profitability of engineering documentation and deliverables across the organisation.
