About the company/role:

Our government client is looking for an TO3 Science Technician to join their Plant Biosecurity Diagnostic Services team on a temporary basis until July 2026. You will be working with Biosecurity Queensland, Plant Biosecurity and Product Integrity

Duties:

• Work independently but under direction to deliver scientific diagnostic services for Panama TR4 samples.
• Apply morphological, biological (VCGs) and molecular-based diagnostic techniques to enable the rapid and accurate identification of Panama Disease.
• Assist general plant health diagnostics to meet the biosecurity needs of Queensland.
• Support the high-throughput sequencing (HTS) team to develop and validate HTS-based diagnostic tests designed to detect Panama.
• Undertake other duties as directed by the Laboratory Manager and Principal Scientist to meet the business needs of the Plant Biosecurity Laboratory and Biosecurity Queensland.

Skills/experience:

• Australian Diploma degree (AQF level 5 or equivalent) or higher in a Science or equicalent in a field relevant to the position
• Knowledge skills and experience in both traditional and molecular techniques to diagnose Panama and other plant diseases
• Experience operating within a Laboratory Quality Management System and using a Laboratory Information Management System is highly desirable
• Experience using high-throughput sequencing platforms such as Oxford Nanopore Technologies MinION, Illumina MiSeq, etc. for plant health diagnostics is desirable
