Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA):

CIRA is a multi-disciplinary research institute engaged in a range of projects involving or motivated by radio astronomy. CIRA’s activities draw together academic, research and professional staff from a variety of science, engineering, and computing disciplines to tackle unique and demanding challenges in radio astronomy and beyond. CIRA is the lead organisation and operator of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), and a key participant in the international SKA project. CIRA comprises the Curtin node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR), an unincorporated joint venture with the University of Western Australia and the WA Government Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science, and Industry.

CIRA and ICRAR deliver a dedicated Translation and Impact program (T&I) with a strong reputation for engaging with partners to share our skills, knowledge, and expertise for mutual benefit. By collaborating with experts in other domains (including industry), we can help boost capability, train WA’s future workforce, grow businesses, and create jobs.

About the Role:

The Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA) invites applications for a Research Associate/Fellow position to undertake pioneering research on the nature and origins of long-period radio transients. This position is supported by an Australian Research Council Discovery Project awarded to A/Prof Natasha Hurley-Walker, in collaboration with Prof Nanda Rea (Institute of Space Sciences, ICE-CSIC), and offers the opportunity to work at the forefront of time-domain astrophysics.
The successful candidate will investigate a newly discovered population of long-period radio transients using data from the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) and the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP). This research will involve multiwavelength follow-up observations and population synthesis to explore evolutionary pathways and physical mechanisms underpinning these enigmatic sources.
Key Responsibilities

  • Analyse archival MWA and ASKAP datasets to detect and characterise long-period radio transients.
  • Conduct multiwavelength follow-up (e.g. optical, NIR, X-ray) to assess the properties and nature of detected sources.
  • Perform evolutionary and population modelling to explore formation scenarios.
  • Contribute to peer-reviewed publications and present findings at leading conferences.
  • Co-supervise undergraduate and higher degree research students.
  • Support the broader Galactic Science programme at CIRA through scientific and computational expertise.

Selection Criteria

  • A PhD in radio astronomy, astrophysics, physics, or computer science.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the astrophysics of stars and compact stellar remnants.
  • Experience with astronomical data processing, particularly involving radio telescopes.
  • Proficiency with scripting in bash and Python in Linux environments.
  • Experience using high-performance computing resources and automated data pipelines.
  • Strong publication record and ability to communicate scientific results effectively.
  • Capacity for collaborative work in diverse, multidisciplinary research environments.
  • Interest in supervising and mentoring students.

Desirable:

  • Experience with transient radio sources and/or pulsar science.
  • Familiarity with low-frequency radio astronomy datasets.
  • Background in multiwavelength follow-up using optical/NIR/X-ray facilities.

Role Requirements:

  • As this is a fixed-term contract, you will require current work rights in Australia that match the tenure of this role to be considered.
  • Successful applicants are subject to a National Police Clearance, and background, integrity, and reference checks to Curtin’s satisfaction.
  • Ability to work outside of normal office hours when required.
