A market-leading industrial solutions company with a proud, decades-long presence across Australia and New Zealand is seeking an experienced Head of Safety to lead and elevate its WHSE strategy across all operations.
In this pivotal role, you will shape and embed a strong WHSE leadership culture across all ANZ sites, ensuring alignment with strategic goals, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives. Partnering closely with operational leaders, you will influence behaviors, enhance safety performance, and drive a consistent, customer-focused approach to risk management and assurance throughout the business.
As a strategic partner to operations and management, you will uphold the highest standards in safety, environmental, and risk management. You will lead initiatives to improve safety leadership, contractor onboarding, and environmental outcomes, ensuring sound decision-making and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Your efforts will directly support the company’s long-term sustainability and ESG commitments, delivering consistent, reliable services and a safer workplace.
Key Responsibilities:
WHSE Strategy & Plan
- Develop, communicate and embed a WHSE strategy which drives and supports a safety leadership culture across the Company
- Plan and manage the implementation of agreed Company strategies and systems, working cooperatively with others involved in the implementation process
- Review the critical risk program and lead the program of work to ensure critical risks are well articulated, controls are fit for purpose and successful implemented across the Company
- Enhance and maintain the Company Safety Management System
- Optimise and manage the Elumina Safrty application
- Develop lead and lag indicators and key performance metrics regarding the effectiveness of the WHS strategy with the Executive e.g. LTIFR, RIFR, hazard identification reportingety application
Health & Safety Leadership Culture
- Work closely with the Executive Group to identify and meet the needs of managers and staff to embed practices into daily activities, including understanding safety leadership responsibilities and behaviours, relevant legislation and regulations
- Provide specialist WHSE advice to the Executive Group, operational managers and supervisors regarding effective management of WHSE matters
- Establish feedback and WHSE learning and development interventions based on identification of capability gaps in partnership with relevant stakeholders, including the WHS Committee, to improve safety culture and outcomes
- Hands on leadership of risk and exposure reduction and injury prevention strategies
- Convene and facilitate the WHS Committee , ensuring agendas and minutes are prepared and the reporting process is effective
- Ensure appropriate performance metrics and plans are in place for operational managers aligned with Company goals
- Establish and maintain effective engagement with frontline teams to embed a safety culture, which will include monthly toolbox topics and materials
Contractor Safety Management
- Oversee and verify the implementation of the Contractor Management Standard across the business with a focus on transport, maintenance and vendors
- Deploy clear onboarding standards, performance scorecards and integrated risk controls ensuring engagement with operational management and vendors
- Continuously partner with service delivery partners to drive a consistent approach to managing critical risks
- Provide plans year on year to strengthen standards, understanding, actions and compliance
Environmental Management
- Implement an appropriate management system to manage current environmental impact. Reporting schedule to be developed with targets.
- Establish systems to monitor and manage regulatory compliance including management of detailed review across the sites
- Ensure control measures are in place for key environmental risks including management of hazardous substances, bulk storage, waste management, stormwater and wastewater discharge, air emissions, odour and noise
- Monitor site compliance including obligations under trade waste agreements, waste disposal requirements, stormwater discharge, noise and discharges to air and codesign remedial plans where requirements are not met
Legal Compliance & Risk Management
- Monitor relevant legislation and standards and make recommendations to senior management regarding appropriate strategies and systems to meet legal compliance requirements
- Identify and prioritise areas of WHSE risk and recommend strategies to reduce, mitigate and manage risk
- Prepare regular reports on Company WHSE performance to inform Company planning and monitoring
- Design and execute an annual site visit and audit program across all sites ensuring outcomes are clear and necessary actions are taken
- Lead the Auditing against compliance with AS4801 and ISO14001 accreditation standards
Incident and Injury Management
- Monitor WHSE incidents and injuries reported in Elumina and develop a plan for prevention initiatives based on trend insights
- Liaise with relevant manager/s to ensure notification of serious instances and occurrences to WorkSafe
- Monitor and facilitate incident investigation and/or assist relevant managers to investigate WHSE incidents as necessary ensuring appropriate remedial and preventative action is taken
- Provide advice and assistance to employees in regard to incident investigation, and implementation of identified action to reduce the risk of future incidents and injuries
- Ensure the development and implementation of organisational strategies to minimise the impact of WHS incidents
- Develop and implement risk management strategies in conjunction with the line manager and specialist injury management organisation to improve risk management
- Liaise with specialist injury management organisation to facilitate effective injury management
Policy, Procedures and Documentation
- Enhance and implement the WHSE Policy and Procedures framework
- Develop, review and maintain comprehensive WHSE Policies and Safe Work Procedures
- Deliver the monthly report to the Executive Group on the WHSE status and performance of all areas
- Oversee EAP provider to ensure effective employee access to counselling services
- Oversee Bodycare services including pre-employment medicals and physiotherapy services (onsite and external)
- Oversee DirectHealth Solutions
Safety
- A safe workplace and system of work is maintained by employee
- Complete 90% of targeted Leadership walks, WHSE Audits, and >90% of corrective action close out within designated timeframe.
- Report and investigate all High Potential Incidents
- Employee understands WHSE policies and contributes to the development of WHSE training
Environmental Sustainability
- Supports environment and sustainability reporting
- Attendance at mandatory training
- Reports environmental incidents/hazards consistent with company policies or procedures
- No adverse impact to the environment due to non-adherence to company policies or procedures
- Reports behaviours and issues which may result in an environmental incident
Quality Improvement
- Participate in the site quality improvement program through quality improvement activities and multi-disciplinary projects as required.
- Participate in the evaluation and implementation of recommendations of quality improvement activities.
- Maintains continuing awareness of outcomes of quality and efficiency improvement activities by attending client and/or department meetings and/or referring to quality improvement reports and minutes
Key Requirements:
- Qualifications in WHS (Minimum Diploma, or working toward) and/or experience equivalent
- A working knowledge of Work, Health and Safety legislation and risk management principles
- Minimum Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or working toward
- Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing and auditing WHSE programs that assist the Company to achieve strategic goals
- Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, presenting and evaluating effective WHS training programs
- Ability to analyse complex data using computer products to review incidents and trends, providing solution focussed recommendations
- Demonstrated experience in facilitating system and culture change in a production work environment
- Experience integrating environmentally sustainable principles into daily operations, supply chains, and company activities
- Demonstrated high level negotiation, mediation, consultation and communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to work both autonomously and in a team environment
- Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently in a high-volume work area while managing competing priorities
- Demonstrated knowledge of WHS law and a sound understanding of AS4801
- Knowledge of WorkCover and injury management processes
- Experience working within a laundry or production environment is an advantage
- Current Valid Australian Driver's Licence preferred
