About the role:

The Registered Nurse, Immunisation, is responsible for working with other health professionals, service providers and stakeholders to improve the immunisation rates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults and children, through the provision of essential, holistic primary health care, based immunisation services.

The Registered Nurse, Immunisation is supervised by the Clinical Nurse Consultant and the position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership in overall immunisation delivery in Clinical Services and Child and Maternal Health, including adult and child immunisation programs and maintain compliance with all reporting requirements to statutory bodies, including recording on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR).
  • Support the delivery of an advanced level of immunisation service in a culturally competent primary health environment. The position is responsible for the provision of onsite, home visiting and outreach immunisation services, including follow-up services and immunisation recalls.
  • Work with the Clinical Services Team and the Engagement and Communications team to implement strategies and Health Promotion aimed at increasing knowledge around immunisation and increasing immunisation rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults and children.
  • Support and ensure staff compliance with legislation, policies, procedures and protocols to achieve and maintain evidence based, safe and effective immunisation delivery in primary health care, with a focus on promotion, disease prevention and education.
  • Actively contribute to education and upskilling of Registered Nurses to ensure best practice immunisation services and attainment of Immunisation Endorsements, as required.
  • Provide day to day support of the immunisation activities of Clinical Services teams.
  • Assist the Clinical Nurse Consultant in overseeing the maintenance of cold chain and immunisation stock, ordering of immunisations and ensure that the storage and transport of vaccines is in accordance with the National vaccine storage guidelines; Strive for 5.
  • Implement and maintain quality assurance systems in accordance with Accreditation standards and internal and external protocols.
  • Participate in meetings, supervision and performance reviews in accordance with organisational requirements.
  • Gather and record statistical data relevant to measuring performance against agreed indicators and participate in review and evaluation activities.
  • Participate in organisational and community activities to advance the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Work within Wuchopperen’s Policies and Procedures including the Staff Code of Conduct and the Work Health and Safety requirements and contribute to continuous improvement processes to ensure compliance with relevant standards and safe, effective service delivery.

Core Capabilities:

For applicants to be successful in this role, they should demonstrate:

  1. Appropriate immunisation qualification with proven ability to develop, deliver and evaluate immunisation programs and education.
  2. Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures from an historical and contemporary perspective, including the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  3. Demonstrated ability to effectively deliver immunisation services in a primary health care setting.
  4. Extensively developed interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to liaise with a range of stakeholders as well as effectively advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a multi-disciplinary team environment, prioritise and meet deadlines, deal with matters of a sensitive and confidential nature.
  6. Demonstrated ability to meet and work within the core values and behaviours of Wuchopperen.

Qualifications and experience:

  • The Registered Nurse Immunisation must have current registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency and must hold Extended Practice Immunisation Authority as per Medicines and Poisons Act 2019.

Requirements:

  • It is a condition of employment in this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), pertussis (whooping cough) and hepatitis B.
  • It is recommended for the employee to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and Influenza.
  • Proof of qualifications and current registration is required to be provided prior to the commencement of duty.
  • Possession of a current CPR certificate or commitment to obtain within the first six weeks of employment is essential.
  • Possession of a current Queensland “CA” class driver’s licence is essential.
  • Commitment to work within the principles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community control including a willingness to develop the leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff.
  • Ability to use Microsoft products and the ability to use or willingness to gain proficiency in the client information management systems.
