Shape the built future of one of Victoria’s most iconic coastal regions
At Surf Coast Shire Council, we don’t just serve a community—we’re part of it. From Bells Beach Djarrak to the waterfalls of the Otways, our region is famous for its natural beauty, vibrant townships, and strong community spirit. We’re proud to work in partnership with Traditional Owners—the Wadawurrung People and the Gulidjan and Gadubanud Peoples of the Eastern Maar Nation—as we protect and enhance this remarkable region.

We're here to help people thrive, and we’re looking for a passionate and experienced Building Surveyor to join us.

At Surf Coast, we work together, we see opportunity, we do what we say, and we make a difference.

Your new career starts here

In this role, you’ll:

  • Engage and educate the public, builders, and property owners on compliance matters
  • Mentor colleagues and support emergency response efforts
  • Be a go-to source of knowledge for internal stakeholders, working closely with our Municipal Building Surveyor (MBS)

This is your chance to work in a values-driven council with a strong team culture and a deep commitment to public safety and wellbeing.

What you will bring to the role

To thrive in this role, you’ll bring:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Building Act 1993 and related legislation
  • Demonstrated experience in inspections, compliance, enforcement, and stakeholder engagement
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build trust with the community
  • Excellent organisational and recordkeeping skills, including report and brief writing
  • Resilience and flexibility to manage after-hours emergency call-outs as part of a roster

What you’ll love working with us
We offer more than a job—we offer the chance to build a meaningful career in a beautiful location, supported by a team that values flexibility, wellbeing, and your professional growth. Enjoy:

  • Flexible working arrangements, including the option to work from home and access to flexi time
  • Option of a regular RDO as part of a supportive 9-day fortnight structure
  • Access to our Employee Assistance Program and an award-winning staff wellbeing initiative
  • Ongoing career development and learning opportunities—we’re committed to helping you grow
  • Operational use of a Council vehicle to support your work in the field
  • The ability to purchase additional annual leave to better balance work and life
  • Free onsite parking for added daily convenience
